Default Value of 1991 944S2

I'm sorry for another "price check" question, but there's a 1991 944S2 coupe not far from here that has cought my eye. I haven't seen it in person, but looks in good shape overall and claims to have service records, etc. It has 122k miles. Black with gray interior (that doesn't look "clean", but not as much in the wear department).

Anyway, the asking price is $11.9k. I know KBB and Edmunds aren't very accurate when it comes to old Porsches, but they don't value the car higher than $6k. And I've seen some decent 951s in the $6-$8k range, so is there a reason why this car would be valued higher? ..or this much higher? It's actually been for sale for a while, do you think this is why?

Love to hear your thoughts!

Cheers

ur range is correct... I would put it at 7-7.5k depending on the interior if the mechanicals are all up to date

Thanks. I wonder if I should bother starting dialog. I hate being a perceived "lowballer"...

I don't know if you're in the VA area, but there's a local dealer selling one at about the $11K price. I've been meaning to stop by and see the car, but honestly he's going to have to come down under $8K and like you say, you don't want to **** the guy off. Problem is, this guy MUST know the market (he's a 944 guru) so I am assuming he's hoping to find an ignorant sucker, but would probably take a much lower offer.

SW Ohio, so not far (or really close, I guess). Very much tire kicking...a recent episode of Top Gear got me thinking about 944s again. I miss my Porsche(s)...*sigh*...

Saw a white Cabriolet parked in a lot down near Super Performance in Ross about a month ago. Might still be there if a cab fits your interests.

I have seen two 944s2 that I'd value over $10k and I should have bought them both (I'm still working on buying one of them but that is a long story).

In the end, I bought one in the recommended price range (6-8k) and am making it into a $10k car slowly and painfully.

I've also seen two whose owners were trying to sell for over $10k and I didn't really say much to them after a thorough look at the car as they were so far out of the ball park. I figure I'm not there to make them feel bad, just to buy a good car. Enough people walking away ought to tell them something.

From someone who owns a 200k mille 1991 S2 here are my thoughts:

If the car has full, documented, up-to-date maintenance records, and

If the car is accident free, and

If the car has M030 and LSD, and

If the clutch is recent, and...then....

If the car is in perfect working order...eg: all options such as ABS, power seats, AC, etc are working....THEN....

If the rest of the car is in great shape I suppose I might consider it for a max of around $10k...

That said...they are GREAT cars....I love mine...but I bought a $5k S2 that quickly became a $10k S2 to get in great mechanical shape.

PS - I remember you....welcome back !

Find out how much it's been tracked, you don't want something that has been trashed about. I know track guys are usually also better maintenance guys, but those can be some hard miles.

Hey thanks! I still come and go...keep coming back to the 4 bangers to get a "modern" Porsche at good value. With the plans we have we can't really "afford" a Porsche right now but it's so hard not driving one when you've had one (or two!) for the past 17 years.

I might get in touch with this guy if he still has the car later in Spring. Here's the car if you guys are interested:

I think it looks pretty nice! Still may be priced high, but I've never seen someone ask less than a car is worth and then hope to get more Maintenance history and options could make it a nice buy.

As a aircooled older 911 fan, doug, you know the old "all 911's are $20K cars" mantra .. To me, all 944's are $10K cars. Just depends how you want to start!

Yeah, what I'm afraid of is starting at $10k and ending up with a $15k car (or more!)

It is quite lovely, isn't it? Love the black and the more modern spoiler...gorgeous.
