Default Best location for oil temp sender?

Posting for a fellow 924S owner...

On the 2.5L cars, is there a viable alternative to mounting a standard oil temp sender that doesn't require drilling and tapping the pan? Pelican sells a kit for the 924S/944 that includes an M14x1.5 sender unit, but I don't believe this is the same size as the oil drain plug. I also see that there is another threaded plug on the upper RHS of the pan, but it doesn't appear that it's in a location where there would be suitable oil to measure temp. I did quite a bit of searching here, on Pelican, and on Clark's Garage, but the only solution I could find was drilling and tapping the pan...

Yeah, that was the alternative I mentioned as well. This guy already bought the kit from Pelican, and the M14 size sender will not work with the sandwich adapter, will require sourcing a different sender. Not the end of the world, but still would be interested in whether there's another solution...

I drilled and tapped the unused plug on the opposite side (driver's) from the drainplug. I assume all 2.5's have that plug. That way if I f-d it up I was just out a plug and not the whole pan.

Cheers

The sandwich plate from prosport can be modified to accept other senders.

maybe all late models. both my early pans don't have a second plug on the driver side.

That is correct. Early pans do not have that plug. I believe the plug is drain from the turbo oil system. Pluged on the NA's.

Did some more digging and searching, and came across this:

$14.95 at http://www.wrxtra.com

You'll still need to get the 1/8"NPT sender, which you can purchase for $6.14 from egauges.com:

I'm still trying to confirm that the 924S oil drain plug is M20x1.5 like the above (which apparently works for the 944 and 928)...should be the same, but would like to confirm.

looks very similar to mine.

The 924S drain plug is identical to the 944 plugs. Heck the 924S motor is identical to a USA spec 944 motor of the same model year.

Apparently solved using Lindsey's oil drain plug that is tapped to accept the VDO 323-057 sender.

Dan - both those bits are ordered and will be at my house by Friday. For reference they are:

> 1) Lindsey plug (20mm x 1.75mm thread with threaded 1/8 NPT hole for
> oil temp sending unit with magnetic end)
> 2) e-gauges VDO sender model # 323-057: 1/8-27 NPT temp sensor

I bought an M20 drain plug from autozone and used the drill press to drill the center out, and a 1.8NPT hand tap to tap out for the sender I bought off pelican - working great for over 2 years.
