Mine is a 1987 944 N/A. I live in Kingston, Ontario, Canada . One thing for me was I wanted 1985.5 up to 1987 as that is the cut off for emissions testing . I hate e-testing it is just a money grab . Here the car has to be 20 years or older up to 1987. But if it is 1988 and newer etest is still required even if the car is 30 years old. Government !!! Keeps getting hands in my pockets . Not sure how it works in the USA.

Well...in Florida we don't have emissions testing at all. They did for a couple of counties a number of years ago, but that has since disappeared. Which is a good thing, when it comes to the Monte Carlo. It has NO emissions equipment on it, at all. The 08 Corvette, even with the motor upgrades, will still pass all sniffer tests. Florida is pretty lax about it...heck, we don't even have vehicle inspections. I think if they did have vehicle inspections, most of the cars in South Florida would fail. Its one of the hazards of living here...have to dodge hurricanes and POS cars. LOL!
My desire for an 85.5-87 is more for the interior looks and the prices they are selling for at the moment. Although, I have seen some pictures of 83-85.1's that have what appear to be velour inserts for the center sections of the leather seats. What is the center insert material on these models? If they are cloth material, it may put the early 85 into a possibility.

Mine is all leather . I'm not a fan of the way the windsheild is not flush in the pre 1985.5 cars

$5000 should get you a VERY good condition 944 N/A, the best ones don't sell for much more. Asking prices and actual selling prices tend to have a lot of air in between.

Best of luck in your search, and be patient, the right one will come along.

You are on the right path and the numbers will get you a great 944.
I have used mine as a daily driver for the majority of the last 12 years. Maintenance is not bad.
If you can find a car with recent belts/pump and clutch, that's great. But these jobs are not particularly difficult, or costly if you do it yourself, and would be a great way to get to know your car, so don't discount a car with unknowns in that area. Just be ready to do these things immediately if you don't have a solid, recent history.
Other weak points are oil cooler seals, ball joints, headgaskets. There are a few more I am sure, but those are the ones that jump out at me.
Good luck, be patient. I was not and my car was a basket case. But it gets better every year.

You've got plenty of speed in your life, forget the Turbo. Just find a clean NA and you will be just fine as a D/D. I've had both and put more miles on the NA in 1 yr vs 10 yrs on the Turbo. I've recently mastered "crazedlist" so the searches come fast and furious. You have tons of great looking choices! (Get a PPI anyway)

Definitely! Once I have a 944, I will be there! One great thing about owning Corvettes is the "family feel" you get from other Corvette owners and it seems like the same type of feel with Porsches.

Checked all of these...
1. Still waiting for a call back.
2. Still waiting for a call back.
3. Contacted the seller for information and he was a jerk. Kept telling me if I wanted answers to my questions to come look at the car. I didn't want to drive an hour each way without better information. That and his attitude.
4. Tampa is a little far...for now.
5. Jacksonville is a little far too...for now.

I am taking my time on this one. The right one will show itself when I am ready. I still need the guy who is buying my 86 Corvette to show up and pick the car up...so I get one car out of my driveway...in time to be replaced. I also want to sell the Monte Carlo SS as well. Some of the $$ I will get from the SS will go to my wife to blow...so I don't have to hear about buying yet another car, from her again. I keep checking Craigslist, Autotrader, Backpage, eBay, etc. I am waiting to hear from some sellers on a couple others. I found one in Fort Myers (1984, but appeared to be in excellent shape), but the dealer was unwilling to answer my questions and told me the same thing as #3 above...come on in and test drive it. Yeah, let me drive 2 hours each way with no answers to my questions. So...until I find one, I will just suffer and drive a 530rwhp Corvette.
Thank you for checking around!! Any help to find the right one for me is GREATLY appreciated!!!!!

Check out the 1989 to 1991 944S2 3.0L 16 valve rocket, tons of bottom end torque, turbo body and suspension.

The old Moroso Motorsports Park eh? I used to do driver's ed there and worked across the road at Pratt & Whitney. If the local Porsche club still does track days you can learn the road course... Good luck and wait for a decent example.

Yep...I drag race at Palm Beach International Raceway (old Moroso). The tracks have been separated...road course is now separate, so they can have events on the road course and drag strip. It is really nice out there now. The Porsche group does still run out there...will have to look them up.

I think once you drive a "regular" 944 (ie, 8valve, naturally aspirated 143-167hp), you will be disappointed by its lack of both low end hp and tq, compared to the V-8s' you've come from.

An S2 or a Turbo would be something you'd like more. Break out the Craigslist/Autotrader ads and pick a day to do some test driving and let us know what you think!

I'm also looking to pick up a 944 NA in the next couple months. Glad I came across this. I knew to look for a recently done timing belt, so it seems like I'm on the up and up mostly. Thankfully my Dad also has the wonderful Disease, so he has been educating me. I mean what better way to get into a real Porsche on a budget?

Thats a pretty garage you have there, my friend. Needs a Porsche though...so good choice.
