Post timing belt inspection?

By looking into the timing belt inspection hole (in the front cover), can you tell if the belt is in need of replacement?

I've looked thru the inspection hole on other 944/951 before and you can visibly see small cracks in the belt and on others none. On my 951, it 'looks' perfect.

I know that the only safe and for sure gage is the mileage intervals, but what if you don't have any records of the last change?
I've been quoted between $450 (belts change only) to $1500 (complete front rebuild).

What do you guys think?

If you don't have any idea when it was changed, change it NOW! You really can't tell by looking at them. Mine looked great when I changed it but I know it was 5 years old. Everytime I drove the car I was wondering if it was about to let go. Don't take a chance with it. A belt change is a lot cheaper than an upper engine rebuild.
