From a cost and reliability perspective how does the 944 turbo rate to other porsches such as a 993 or 996? Is there a problem getting parts due to the age of the vehicle? Assuming primarily DE use. Thanks.

Well, talk about all over the map...
An OK 993/6 can be had for the cost of a REAL nice 951, but that aside I would be inclined to say they are about equal, as the 951 will require more maintenance but the 99X parts will cost more...
Having driven my 951 at get togethers with 99X drivers, I get more compliments and comments about the 951 than they do on their cars, last one I went to resulted in a surprised C4s owner assuming my car had a V8 conversion, followed by WOW, (944 turbos are REALLY fast)...
You won't touch a forced induction 99X for the cost of the 951, and at the end of the day the boost is addictive, I have been known to liken it to crack (see CPRs signature...)
The 99X cars are known for being much more refined than the 951, Much easier to drive on street and track, but a properly sorted 951 will destroy any N/A 99X car in both places...
I guess it all comes down to you, and what you are looking for in the experience... Get out and drive as many of each as you can... then decide if you want visceral rush, or refined excitement.
And there is little worry of getting parts for the 951, I still seem to have good luck being able to order them from the dealership... but that could just be my dealer as they have 2 master techs who also drive 951s...

plenty of parts available from great rennlist sponsors- cheaper than the dealership in most cases. Someone is bound to say that a turbo is more expensive than an n/a maintenance wise- but in my case i havent seen it.

Parts for my 996 are more than for my 951 (but not by much). My 951 is older and requires more maintenance... but, if the 996's IMS bearing ever implodes, the 996 will become more costly than the 951.
My 951 is faster than my 996 on the track - but I have a lot of money in that 951... The 996 is almost as fast - and is still a street car!
It's really a matter of your budget - what's the newest Porsche you can afford? You may find that picking up a SPBOX (spec Boxster) or track prepared Cayman is going to serve you better...

Knock on wood but my 951 has been rock solid as long as I have owned it.
It has been my DD for 20k miles and has taken several 5+ hour road trips with no problems along the way....except maybe a case of plumbumpesitis...
