Question Oil Pressure Gauge Pegged

Put the key in the ignition and turned to the position just before engine crank. The oil pressure gauge pegs to the top. Start the engine and the needle stays pegged. No movement whatsoever.
Engine oil level is fine and oil is fresh. Car drives fine.
Any ideas where the problem could lie?

My guess is the oil pressure sending unit.

Mine was the oil-pressure relief valve. I have an '86 which had the 3-piece unit. I up dated to the one piece and that solved my problem. carpartstogo.com has the '86 1-piece for $213(cheapest i found).

my experience with the oil pressure sender is that when it goes bad, it pegs the needle.

Easy fix, although I think the part is $80 from Porsche. I don't know if there is another vendor that is cheaper-but probably.

My experience with a stuck relief valve is that there was no pressure at start, and then pegs. However, it still fluctuated around 4-5 bar when driving (there was needle movement)-if yours is staying pegged-I would first check the sending unit.

Good luck with it!

Could also be an open or a short on the wire from the sender. Apparently it passes close by the alternator and if damaged could cause the pegging of the gauge.
I have the same problem, just haven't had the opportunity to check the wires.
Also verify the wires are on the correct terminals on the sender. Although if that were the case you would have the gauge pegged and the oil light would be on.
