Faulty 944 Fuel Gauge

My 944 fuel gauge does not work properly. When the tank is actually 100% full, it only reads 3/4 full. And so on.
So when the tank reads "E" it actually has about a 1/4 tank of gas.
The orange reserve tank light appears to work properly, only coming on when the fuel is down to the last couple of gallons. Nevertheless, I would like to fix the gauge to proper working order.
Has anyone had this problem and/or tried this repair?

yep
same for me
i just live with it... the needle will ride all the way on the bottom even when i probably have like 5 gallons left... but the light is a good indicator of having 2-3 gal left so i just wait for it.
ive heard you can clean up the fuel sensor.. but it sounds unfun and not worth it.. but please.. someone chime in with how easy it is

I live with mine too.. I have never seen the low tank warning light come on, so i dont know if it works.. I put 8 gals in at the "half" mark to fill, and about 12 gals when my guages reads the last line.. BTW what is the total fuel capacity supposed to be? and why are the markings so much offset at the guage?? I never got it but dont ever get that close to empty.. <img src="confused.gif" border="0">

Mine does not work at all but the low fuel light does. I have a fuel sender I got out of a 924 to try and replace it but I havent got a chance to try yet. I dont know if they are the same or not but I will post when I do. For that matter, I dont even know if thats whats wrong.

I have the same problem with the needle. I haven't gone to the point where light comes on. I did pull an early 944 fuel level sender from a junked porsche, but turns out is it different than late 944, which is what I have. Looking at the design of the early one, I am wondering if there is an positive offset we could introduce in the circuit to "full" the needle to read a quoter tank higher... I can try doing it with the sender I have to see if this problem could be solved for pre-85.5 models. It I succeed, I would suspect newer sender will have a similar solution... What do you guys think?

Somebody posted pictures of both fuel tanks out of the car...early tanks were steel, with a 16-gal. capacity; later ones were 21-gal., made out of plastic. I don't know when the changeover occurred.
There is a procedure to repair the sender that'll show up in a search of the archives. Pretty common problem; mine does it too. Orange low fuel light does come on, but needle has to be directly in line with lowest white mark...at this stage you've got approx. 2 gallons in tank (for 21-gal. tank). Oddly, there's no check of this warning light with key in "On" position before you start car...every other warning light illuminates though.
Good luck!!

I wasn't getting a reading. I took my sending unit out, very easy, sprayed carb cleaner in the small hole near the bottom of the shaft. Covered it and the hole near the top and swished the cleaner around till I heard the float moving freely. Works great .
