Unhappy power steering leak

There appears to be a leak in the power steering of my '86 951. I noticed fluid near the right front tire. I checked the resevoir and it was almost emtpy. Also the fluid was blackish. Since I replace the rack about 5 years ago I assume it's not that. I can't get around to fixing it for a while. I've read on a previous posting that I can just keep adding fluid for a while. I've noticed there are various "stop leak" fluids for power steering and wonder if this could provide a temporary fix. Also since the steering system uses transmission fluid, should I get stop leak for power steering or for an automatic transimission. Thanks in advance!

Do not use the stop leak fluids! My car had a similar problem, the pump sprung a leak. The stop leak fluids will gum up the steering pump and make it totally useless!!! I speak from personal experience...

again, do not use the stopleak if u want to really fix the problem.

have u found the leak? it could be in the hose where it connects to the reservoir. just wipe your finger down the hose and see if it's wet.

otherwise, yea just take off the power steering belt. work out the some arm muscles for a while until u can get around to fixing it

Replacing the power steering pump is actually fairly straight forward.
Clark's garage has a good write up. There are only a few bolts that hold the pump in place and its an easy 1 hr job.

Did you replace the reservoir when you did your power steering? Mine had a leak and that fixed it....seems to be a common problem. The bottom connection of the reservoir goes bad over time and was the culprit. Your leak sounds like where mine was...
