My New Stereo! (Finished w/ pics)
It came today! Not till 6:30, though, so I only got it partly installed. I'm putting in a Blaupunkt head unit, and 2 4X6's and 2 6.5's. Should sound pretty good. I got all of this from <a href="http://www.midwest-usa.com" target="_blank">http://www.midwest-usa.com</a> for about 185 dollars shipped, and it only took 4 days.

I'll take some pics tomorrow of the front speakers, I put those in today. I used the new grilles, as the speaker sticks out way to far for the stock ones. There is some space around the grille that needs to be filled with something black, but i'll worry about that later.
The PO butchered the factory harness for the receiver, so I'm gonna wait to tackle that tomorrow, as well as pulling the rear window to put in the other speakers.

Looks like a pretty good system Conor. Does the head unit play mp3's. That's the ticket if you burn your own cd's. Let us know how it turns out.

those 6.5's gonna fit in the rear of a 924S? What openings does the 924S have? Is it 4x6's front & center & 4x6's in the rear? If so, sounds like the ultimate setup for a 5.1 setup

Well, it looks like I have a problem with the rears. Everything I read before said that the opening in the back would be big enough for 6.5's and that they would probably need an adapter plate. Not in the 924s apparently. It is only a 4x6 opening. So, hear is my question: is it ok and safe to grind away a spot for the new speakers? I would have to do it partially below and to the right of where the opening is now, but depth is not an issue. What do you think?

sorry to hear that. anyone know if the 6.5's will fit the rear in a 944 for sure? How do the fronts sound? Do they have tweeters built in? Alex, give me your opinion on them too please...

Yes. Use sheet metal shears -- the ones with the colored grips. Get the right hand cutting green grips.
Get the speaker as far up and back as possible and use a piece of sheet metal to fill in what's left of the stock opening.
Cut a little at a time and check the fit. Unless you are good at TIG welding.

every model 924/944 had 4X6 openings. i have yet to see a 944 series car with anything other unless it has been custom work.
in my car, i have the 6.5's in the back but i wasnt able to mount them. i just put them there, held them with one screw, and pushed the panel back on against them. the panel sticks out a little bit where the speaker goes, but its not very noticeable.

As far as I have been able to tell in all 87+ 944's (not 924's as we can see here) there is a 4x6" opening with an adaptor plate that can be removed to fit a 6.5" speaker. I know because I did it in mine ('87).
One problem that you may have in cutting your 924 is depth...in my 944 the speaker protrudes into the fender, and while that's not a problem in my 944, the 924 doesn't have as deep a fender, so it might not fit.
As for cutting, you may want to have someone who has a 944 with the adaptor plates ('87+) make a template of their plate & send it to you so you can use it as a template to cut the hole for your speakers. I would do this for you, but I'm about 2 hours from where I have those plates stored.
