Default Repainting an S2 valve cover...

The original cream colour looks like it would be quite tricky to find a good match for in VHT paint or powder coat.

What can people suggest as a good alternative colour?

This one was done in "satin silver" powder coat, athough it looks slightly gold in the photo:

(Actually for a 928 S4, but same part... they just have two S2 engines under there...)

They turn creamy over time but start out a more silver-gray.

OK, thanks -- that makes it a lot easier to find something consistent with the original colour.

Though not much silver-gray these days...

Mark,

I used K&H "Aluminium" colour for mine. The old paint is a bitch to get off. Suggest get hold of some aircraft grade paint stripper (nasty stuff but works well). I used normal hardware shop grade stripper and it struggled to remove it all - must have taken me 2 hours to get it off.

I like the creamy color and the contrast with the silver intake manifold, myself. Pretty sure it was more of a beige to begin with, though.

Problem with painting the cover a different color is that the cam covers will still stand out in the old beige color.

I'll get to that one day!

I actually prefer silver like the 968 cam cover. Beige looks a little weird to me.

I though of red - but I thought that might look a little "boy racer". Probably just showing my age

I used several applications of ordinary paint stripper over time. It took a while but not a lot of effort.

The original color can be found on some time capsule 928s and probably museums, sales literature, etc.

Earnie9468, Would you mind sharing the info on the paint you used. It looks really good. All my paint pretty well just peeled off, underneath is a charcoal gray undercoat which I think works nicely. Your solution would work perfectly for me. That is one awesome engine bay, it looks like it's just rolled of the assembly line.

The paint is call "Dupli-Color Metalcast Anodized surface colour system" cost is approx $9.00 cdn a can ,can be found at almost any auto store. This paint usualy work better on bare surface alluminium or steel I also did my exhaust tip & rad cap with it & it work so it should work on your undercoating. PREP_ surface has to be extra clean I use either varsol or paint thinner to remove any dust prior to shooting.Shooting distance is about 12" from the object (very important----shoot very thin layers at the time ,let dry approx 1 hr between layers at room temp , keep shooting until you get the desire colour or (hue) the last layer let it dry for about 12 hrs before installing the cam cover back one & once more resist the temptation of shooting to thick if you get a drip with this paint your done.If you succeed send use a pic. As you can see by my 944 engine bay pics you can paint almost anything (RED) with it even hoses clips.
