How much would a shop charge for a head gasket?

I think my head gasket may be blown. There's white smoke from the side of the engine and exhaust. Also, the car idles roughly, and almost died out.
I no longer have the time or patience to fix anything else major on the car. I just want this damn car fixed, and fixed right.

The estimate was also $1100 when I needed it done so I learned how to do it myself. Armed with the Haynes manual and the 944 email list ( we didn't have web forums yet ) I was able to do the job.

The man is being modest. His 944-repair exploits resounded throughout the Rennlist E-Mail community and gave rise to the legendary "Cooper Cup." Many of us look up to his ballsy approach to 944 maintenance, so if you think you have what it takes for a DIY headgasket, you're looking at a real role model.
Here's to Jim Cooper. I hope you're feeling better these days!

I'm in the middle of my 951 head gasket and the quote I got from my local shop was around $1200 not including a head rebuild. Which is exactly why I'm doing it myself. It's all labor. Nothing a weekend and a few six packs of beer can't fix. LOL!

You are looking at about 150.00 labor from a machine shop to do the head work (replace guides, check the head, etc...). And a few hundred dollars in parts (head gasket, head nuts that will need to be replace, gaskets for the stuff that will need to be removed to get the head out, a few hoses here and there that you find will need to be replace, etc). Good time to do all the front seals, timing and balance belt...
But it is definite something you can do at home if you have the time and some level of skill.
