Just reading this thread, how much real interest is there in this? did you guys ever go to the wind tunnel?
If there was a large enough group I'd be interested in joining the wind tunnel day.
Were in the process of scanning a scale model 944 (were using a model as we can easily scan in house rather than spend $3-5k on the scan) with the intent of creating a CAD model for use in CFD analysis but since its not a paying project it keeps getting bumped. The great benefit of using CFD is that we can easily run what if scenarios, I say easily to run a fully detailed car is typically 12 - 14hrs of computer time.
When the snow start to fly I might find more time to work on it.

1st pic is pressures on a 924, 944 should be similar. Second pic is my car from yesterday's race. Wing is a GTracing 70" carbon fiber predator. Pic was taken at Barber, just after coming onto the front straight. I estimate that the speed would be about 95mph at that point. Look at the bow middle of the wing from the downward pressure. At Barber I run about 8 degrees on the rear wing, less for RA and other longer tracks.

I run and maintain a windtunnel lab here at UT -if someone has a scale model they'll let me hack up and shove pressure tubes in - then we could just do the real thing. Model needs to fit in 20"X20" cross section. I can get speeds up to 100mph.

-Paul
(PS - if someone would pay me a very small fee to do this - that would be great, because this service would normally cost quite a bit - and there will be extensive setup time and data analysis to get it done. )

Hi Paul,
I'll PM you with contact info, but simply when we have the CAD genreated from the scan we can print a model you can run, it would be useful for us to have a case study of CFD v wind tunnel results.

I'd chip in $50 to make this happen and see the results...

Anyone has an update on any "real" 944 wind tunnel pictures?
Looks like a 928 to me?

Tim did you have to make suspension changes due to the wing? Did you have to increase springrates? I'm planning on installing potentiometers to assist in these matters with a similarly sized wing.

PM'd Andy back - we'll see what it takes to get it done. I am speaking with the department about test costs - hopefully they will be minimal if anything at all (fingers crossed for free!). It will be awhile before the job gets done unfortunately.

The next question of course is.......will we publish all the data to RENNLIST!? haha If Andy has to pay in some way for it - thats his call as the data would be his property. - At least having some color plots without the numbers on them could be entertaining!!

I'll keep everyone posted!

Let's see what it costs, as for the cfd I'm sure no body would want to pay the 'market' value so I think well just publish at least the basic stuff unless any body out there has money burning a hole in there pocket it might inspire some fun body work.

I am wandering out of my normal air-cooled comfort zone here, but I enjoyed reading through this thread.
This paper, written by Mitsubishi Motors, on Vortex Generators is pretty intriguing and would be a very cheap/easy mod to try and replicate. This explains the strange little fins on the back of the Evo (that's how I found the paper, trying to figure out why Mitsubishi did that).

While I was going to UCSD they had a senior project to assist with designing Aero Aids for a 914. Getting a school endorsed class project going would be the best way to get this done at a University because all the lab fees etc would be cleared and you would have students do all the leg work!

Good luck! I hope you post the results. The more information shared the better!

actually if any body checked ,there are VG inside the front bat wing, stepped middle plate around the
sump and inwards flow director plates on the third section of the 944/951/968 undertray sections
which speak volumes for the wind tunnel testing by Porsche.
The speeds and internal engine bay are significantly different from ,with trays and without trays.
Imcidentally the 968 aerodynamics were designed after extensive testing with the 917.

I still have this on the list, need to find cad time to create a good model. We have 3d scan data done but it will take time to clean and re model to use for the cfd.

I wonder how a 944 vs 924 vs no spoiler will change the characteristics (downforce/drag) on a 924
