Default Cruise control not working right - keeps accelerating

Hi Everyone,
Working through the list of things to fix this winter and have come to the next issue. The cruise control is operating but not as expected. When I engage the cruise the speed the speed does not stay at the speed rather accelerates and does not stop accelerating until the cruise is disengaged. For example engaged the cruise at 60MPH and finally disengaged at 85 or so. Have verified this multiple times at different speeds, load levels and road conditions. Any advice is appreciated.
Cheers
Ed

Mine did the same thing. Replaced the cruise control computer module under the drivers side dash....way up in there when you're on your back looking up the outside firewall. silver box little bigger than a cigarette pack. That should fix it. 2 bolts holding the bracket and plug and play socket.

Some have had luck with doing a complete resolder of the cruise control brain pc board. It worked for me for about three months then went back to full acceleration when engaged. I got tired of pooping with it so bought a used one on ebay for around $25. You can also rename it your "Wide Open Throttle Switch," or look for a used one on ebay or maybe someone has an extra here. Try the resolder first. Free fix if it works.

Morning ,
Thanks for the advice. No Toy mats.....matter of fact the car came with nice black Porsche mats. Not for this car specifically but rather nice. THe mats are not influencing the pedal...my first thought also. Removed them and the problem still there. Solder is my friend.....solder is my friend....

Thanks again
Cheers

Yeah like mtccl said, it's the computer. Mine used to do the same thing.
I was "cruising" behind someone one time and the computer just pulled the pedal and almost zoomed me up into him.

C'mon....we both have "N/As." There is no "zooming" involved here

If i may ask a question, could someone, anyone with a late model interior post a picture of where there cruise control switch is AT?

My 88 944s has the whole cruise control unit, but i swear to god i have looked everywhere for the switch and have not found one.

One time i drove a early model and the cruise control was on the left turn signal stick. I have nothing like that on mine.

Its on the right side of the wheel below the washer stalk, its a stubby and its labeled. theres no on/off switch.

Also my dads 968 swapped 89 s2 does this, i thought i might be an issue related to the engine swap (his heat is on/off and no a/c due to it) but i guess i let him know to check the cruise box..

Default Back to thinking about the cruise

Hi Everyone,
The engine is back together and crusin in in process (ok tranney is still shifting funny but that is another story). Anyway I pulled the cruise control computer out and took the case off. Not doubting anyone's advice but let me sy this is one of the prettiest PCBs I have seen in 30 years in manufacturing. The solder is shiny, no obvious cold solder joints or any other malady seen. The PCB is sealed and all of the sealant is there and appears to be in good shape without breaks or cracks. The components appear without dis-coloration or apparent damage. So with this said I would think unless a component is just plain bad and has no physical damage showing this computer is in good shape. What else can cause runaway accelleration? Any ideas?

Ed, there is nothing else wrong other than the CC brain that is causing the WOT problem. You cannot tell that a component is bad by just looking at it. Your options are 1.) Get a used brain from ebay or here. 2.) Try resoldering (reflowing) EVERY solder point. 3.) Try replacing the two blue axial electrolytic capacitors. I forget their values, but they are the only two light blue caps that sit together. This sounds like a typical electrolytic cap failure as most report their units start acting up when the weather turns colder. There is no "other problem," beyond the CC brain.
