sound proofing on hood
I'm thinking about taking it off because its flaking really bad, any pros and cons.Does it increase noise levels much? Is there a supplier for replacement materials , is it worth it. Any other input.

My S2 never had any...it generates less heat than the turbos do, but later turbos didn't have it either so I dunno. There was a thread on this not too long ago. Search the archives I don't think anyone mentioned having any problems after taking it off.

No problem taking it off. I believe some of the later cars didn't have it anyway. Mine was disintegrating badly and I removed it with my shop vac.

Mine is deteriorating badly and I was thinking of scraping it off. I had heard that the heat from the engine can ruin the paint on the hood but it sound like I can get away with it! Hmmm another project for the 944.

it is my understanding that you can get the mylar/aluminum rep[lacement padding for very little money at most autoparts stores, if you really want to have the insulation there and dont want to spend 75.00 for styrofoam...

My Turbo S doesn't have it, although I THINK it might have originally- can't really tell, but the hod paint looks worse than the rest, and, i want something under there to help muffle the noise a hair- some say they can't tell a dif, but I thikn it all adds up- may be wrong though- I just think it might help a TIN Y bit anyway(?).
I had considered the aluminum looking ones- I've heard that they can actually REFLECT heat back onto the engine- not sure about this, but it is a concern to me- anyone know? do certain types do it worse? I'd really like to know a little more about it before shelling out the $$$

My '88 came without the pad as well. Ditch it carefully, they painted the underside of the hood almost as carefully as the top. Clean it up well, wax it, and you'll have no problems with heat.
Now, brake fluid squirting out of the reservoir at the track... That's a different story! Some rubber-band a rag on the cap, I don't.
Wow, just turned 140k miles... Time to go up to Road America!

Goof-off is good but it's costly...my sugjestion is to to to home depot and get a can "Xylene". It's the commercial name for Xylol. It's similar to Toluene but slower drying... The best advice I can give is cover the engine bay with plastic when you do this or you will be sorry.
