Question 944 Head Removal Time

Ok so I just bought my second Porsche. I picked up an 83 NA 944 for next to nothing and a favor. It needs the head replaced do to an improperly set timing belt. I picked up a good used head and plan to do the water pump update and replace front side seals while I am in there. Any recomendations to wether I replace head studs, nuts and washers. The head has been off once before. What year waterpump do I order to use along with an updated timing kit. Thanks for your time. Matt

You can order correct parts by model year at www.pelican-parts.com and www.paragon-products.com. Both have excellent service and have been a help to get mine back on the road.

It's a good idea to do the head bolts but not needed. There may be differing opinions on this of which I would just defer to replacement. The waterpump depends on what year the car is. If it already has the upgraded turbo pump, you can run with the same. If not, you can choose a rebuilt version of the NA pump for your year car. If you upgrade to the turbo pump you will have to do the cut-outs on the belt covers and install the ramp kit. I think if you dig into a parts list like Pelican, everything will be layed out for you. IIRC, the automatic belt tensioner makes a differance which is year dependant. What are you going to do with the old head???

mine is an 83 so no auto tensioner. So it was just the turbos waterpump that I need? the old head needs vavles . I have no real plans for it. If I do replace the studs is it necessary replace he nuts and washers too?

We've never replaced the head studs on any of the race engines rebuit. The nuts and washers though should be replaced or cleaned and free of burrs/ scoring.

You can run stock studs in a stock(ish) NA race engine no problem. You only need the heavy duty stuff under boooooooost.

Go to Clark's Garage:

http://clarks-garage.com/

Hit the "W" for water pump, it has a table of original and upgrade parts needed.

I have never touched head studs in any of my race motor builds, nor have heard of any stock head stud issues in 944 spec race motors. Now if a stud is damaged in some way you will need to address it, but changing not required by any means.

ok good no matter where I look stud kits aren't cheap. I had read that the can strech and need to be replaced after one or 2 head replacements. I am already spending a good amount on the timing set, water pump, gaskets and the head. Thanks for your help. hopefully I will have her out on the road soon. Anybody have opinions on felpro vs. Reinz

Yeah it got mine too.
No tricks really... Just a bolt extractor and a good deal of rage. It sucks.
