Don't knock the deer whistle - they are an essential prerequisite in our locality.
My only accident (even after 16 years as a driving instructor) was a bloody stupid deer that mounted my car at 60mph.

However, here in the UK it is an offence to drive with fog lights on unless it’s actually foggy. Otherwise, if you want to be seen, use the dipped headlights during the day.

A car is more visible with it's lights on, even in broad daylight. Simple as that. I don't have trouble seeing cars in ideal conditions, but who's ever crashed under those? It's when the sun's in your face, or you're on a sunny backroad with huge car-hiding tree shadows all over it that they become very useful. Daytime lights aren't distracting, they're not imperative, they're just not a problem.

Foglights should come on with the parking lights, and they should flash with the brights when the lights are off and the foglight switch is off.

DRL's have been statistically proven to help avoid accidents as well as third brake lights, etc. I remember a few years ago when the fire trucks were repainted from red to yellow due to visibility.

auto manufaturers do not want to spend more money on the production of vehicles anymore than you may want the extra cost. (Fact of life.)

The only way to prove it was to do a study, one of the many infamous studies performed by the National Insurance Institue for Highway Safety. (Yes, those guys.) I worked for a lagre property/casualty insurer while going through school and I received their reports monthly. Interesting reading with cool pics of destroyed cars. (In a lab of course.)

I think any safety item is a help. I don't want to have to get my car repaired and I don't feel like dying just yet.

Note, however, that fire trucks are now being painted red once again. Mostly due to tradition, but it is no longer an issue that red is one of the colors which is hardest to see at night. Now, with current lighting and reflective material requirements, color of the rig (especially at night) is no longer a significant issue.

Supports your point, though, that LIGHTS are the most effective way of making a vehicle seen... especially the flashing red or blue ones (but that is another topic).

Simpson, Brian has a somewhat elaborate setup. I do too, but wouldn't do it again.

I assume you are going to run 100 watt bulbs in the driving light side. Those are so bright that they will bother other drivers even in broad daylight. So you may want to just tie the relay trigger to the main/high beam so the driving lights mimic them. Brian M. did that and he is happy. It also makes wiring a lot easier and a bit cheaper.

Bruce, those deer whistles are the subject of great debate around here. We are overrun with white tail deer, and I mean overrun - I can see 3 of them looking out my window right now in the city, and people smack into them all the time. The whistles don't seem to help scare them away and some folks actually claim they attract the deer! <img border="0" alt="[hiha]" title="" src="graemlins/roflmao.gif" />

A bit OT, but over here it's illegal to drive without lights (daytime running lights or low beams). I almost got a ticket in my 944S, which didn't have fog lights - so since I don't like how a 944 looks with the headlights up, I just drove around with the parking lights on... the cop who pulled me over was having a nice day so he just gave me a verbal warning that time. Now, with the 951, I run with front fog lights on, and with dad's Passat I'm burning the xenons all the time

And what about the idiots, who are just as numorous, that don't turn their headlights on at dusk or in rain?

DRLs have been included on all new cars in Canada for quite awhile so the norm is seeing all cars with lights on. The system uses low beams at a reduced current so it isn't quite as bright as low beams. I've been driving for quite some time and saw some crashes where drivers drove right into the other car, they said didn't see em. If painting all cars bright yellow or putting refelective tape all over the cars saved a few folks big misery, why not. But DRLs is a better option I think, and recently stats were posted that indicated Ontario roads safest in all North America. That led to the next debate about raising speed limits on acouna we're all so safe now.

WOW WOW I can't believe that some people would rather not have DRL's .My opinion they are great safety item. I will be converting mine over as the original post .There are many day when at certain times of the day that I think that I wish I could turn the fogs on with not having to run the parking lights as that is what they are parking lights. I also have a volvo and when the car is running the parking lights and the headlights are on, they can not be turned off. The head light switch only turn's the instument cluster lights on or off. Just some info from another car maker. Will try the conversion ASAP for my own safety . I know I can drive it is the people out there that don't see you with no lights on at certian times of the day. . Hope that some of my fellow 944 friends don't end up in an accident due to not being seen by another driver. Thanks you all for your own opinion's.

Wow what a hornets nest this turned into. Washington951, since you are a cameraman it would have been a greater artical if only you had taken some pictures along the way. I do not care what anyone says, DHL are a life saver in many cases. Really tho if you stop and think about it, just how many of us do a walk around our cars to see if all our lights really work as they should??? We all just hop in the car and off we go. I know I do that.

wow. six years later...that's pretty cool.
i really do hope it helps someone.
i wish i would have taken some pictures, but i was pretty consumed with the actual install!
funny thing is that i sold that 951 nearly 4 years ago, now.
hopefully, it's still alive and well!!!
