Rock's S2 - no crank
hooked up a battery in Rock's S2/ turbo conversion to crank the new motor and try to make sure i had oil pressure. Not trying to start it just crank it up and get some pressure. Im getting no crank- doesnt even try. I checked all the battery and starter connections and everything is fine. If i jump the positive battery wire on the starter to the ignition wire-smaller wire- it cranks fine. Something is keeping the key from cranking the car. The alarm should let it crank but not start, im getting nothing from the key. IDEAS?

Weird. So obviously when you turn the key the ign lights up etc? I had an issue today with a car. While it did crank, it wouldn't kick. Lifted the hood up so I could turn the key through the window but be able to check that the injs were clicking away. The car would start to try and kick over. So I put the hood down and got back in the car. Nothing. Wouldn't kick. Damn. Got out again. Walked around to the LHS to release the hood catch (that's annoying by itself). Lifted the hood. Put my hand in again to start it. Phut Phut Phut...trying to kick over. I think I just want to get in and push the gas pedal. So I get back in. Turn the key. Nothing. No kick. WTF?? Finally after it played me for about half an hour of this stupid game I got it..............it did make me think however that something about the alarm was stopping it kicking....until it actually kicked. Long story short...I'm thinking alarm somehow...
Best of luck guys.

Sounds like a clutch safety switch, or a neutral lockout...
I remember a long time ago, about a week after I bought my first automatic, I went to lunch, got back in the car, turned the key, and.... nothing. I was dumbfounded and assumed I'd bought a piece of **** (well, in reality, it was!) Finally, after about 5 minutes, when I was just about ready to call a tow truck, I realized I'd turned it off in drive, and it was still in drive!

tried pressing in the clutch but this car has no neutral safety apparently. I was thinking maybe it was the alarm - hood is off- but not sure. Yes Rock all the wires are plugged in.

On the connector that Rock circled, jump power from the battery to the thicker of the two wires. If it doesnt crank, you need to check the starter or power supply. If it does, you need to go through some other stuff....

Dan, hope this doesen't sound stupid, but without knowing all that has been done to it, does it spin freely if you try to turn it over manually using the crank bolt?

Could it be that the ignition position is dead in the place-where-you-put-the-key ? Not most unusual situation at least in our cars. Have you measured that part?

It was troubleshooted by measuring voltage from the key at the white connector and ignition switch while trying to crank.

i'll check it out tonite- dunno- the car started fine etc before we parked it. It cranks if i jump the power wire to the smaller start signal wire on the starter, so the engine turns, starter works. I'll recheck my connections tonite and see what i can find.

Dan,
Un plug the ingition switch from the back of the key switch under the dash. You will be able to see the signal wire going down to the starter, make sure it is not broken using a ohm meter. The last time the exact thing happenend to me, I was only getting 6-8 volts to the signal wire(small wire) at the starter. I had a bad ground. Cleaned it, and all is well. You will need someone to turn the key to the start position, while you are checking the voltage at the signal wire at the starter. You have to have 12v

The alarm will not stop the car from cranking. WILL NOT.
Trust me, ive had the alarm enabled and tried starting the car. The car cranked, didnt start and the alarm sounded.

hahah- ended up being somehow the alternator wiring got installed backwards. Cranks now- Havent seen oil pressure yet but slow cranking and cold oil no wonder. Started cleaning the car out and looking for parts.
