this is just not cool. i dont even know what to say. looks like owning an old porsche is really meant for those who have enough money to buy a new one but just choose to play the risks of owning an older one? sigh..

hey jeremy, whats the good shop? i just did a 250 dollar tuneup and im just wondering if maybe i should get a second opinion on my belt tension.. car sounds kinda rough at throttle but hey maybe thats how its supposed to be (and wasnt with a dirty air filter?) hmm..

Point taken riff. My car was also running like new until they got a hold of it. I mean, I love the car, and it runs like new. But the tranny thing and the water pump now. All I'm saying is that if your gonna take a car, you'd better damn well make sure it's not worse than when I brought it in. My car is devoid of any dings dents runs great. Then they install the water pump and tranny and whammo. Driveline rumble, water pump leakage, etc, etc. They took what was a perfect example of a well taken care of Porsche for 10 years and in only two years turned it into a car that I'm afraid to drive long distances. That is wrong. I slaved and slaved over all my cars (BMW 535i, Porsche 944 S2, Acura Legend) I am fanatic about maintanence and cleanliness. And these guys just make all of that go right out the window. And the Bastard is not returning my calls. Damn him. Sorry guys to bring this crap subject up. I'm just at the end of my rope. It's like they are putting on a ski mask and waiting for me in the my garage!!!

[quote]I can't work on my own car because I work full time during the day as a network analyst and at night I have my own business building PC's for clients

No, you can't work on your car 'cause you're a PC specialist, and under the hood you don't know your *** from your elbow. [quote]And yes, not all mechanics are crooks, there are you happy. But about 95% of them are

You paint with a mighty broad brush there podna'.Kinda' like those damned PC repair guys who charged me $75 to look at my box after a lightning strike. "It's all bad,,,needs to be scrapped" I spent $99 bucks for a moboard and it was good as new, all thanks to a friend at work who took the time to actually diagnose. Looks like this "expert" **** kinda' cuts both ways huh ? I tell ya what I think you might want to do. Either find somebody who can work on you car to your satisfaction, or get a Honda.

My mechanic also has driven a 944 ever since i've known him (about 8 yrs) and i believe thats certainly good for some peace of mind.

Yeah, not only does it cut both ways, it cuts all ways. Mechanics, doctors, carpenters, lawyers, the president. This nation was founded by pirates. The only thing that makes it worth sticking around is the the decent people that we are fortunate enough to encounter. There are mechanics that are good people. It's just that being a crook and getting away with it gets them more of what society tells them they should be after(money, power, women) and less spiritual growth.

Yeah Mark you make a good point. But there is a big difference between thousands of dollars and one hundred dollars. Also, anybody who really wants to can build their own PC now. You don't need any specialized tools really. To work on a car you require special tools, a lift, gobs of other stuff so the comparison is not quite just that simple. I understand your point though. But car mechanics have got to be the worst. That's why you see them on Hard Copy and what ever those freakin caught on tape shows are so much. They know they will not be challenged and that's that. Plus they know you need your car to live so they can cram it down your throat. Nobody needs a pc to live day to day. And if you did you could buy one for about $400 us. I hope your not angry but I think your point is kinda weak. We're talking about very large sums of money here. Not some motherboard. And thanks for the name of that mechanic. I'm going to go by there and see what his shop looks like. I'm going to ask him like a thousand questions and tell him about what has happened to me. We'll see what he tells me.

Oh, and as far as not knowing my *** from my elbo.....I was a SAAB man for many years and changed many a turbo and head on those cars. Once I redid my head in like 10 degree weather in my back yard using just a tarp as a cover. So lets not speak before we know what we're talking about....OK

My guy's honest and knows the car inside out, as well as racing one. Last year, for example, he replaced the engine seals inside the timing belt case. When it started leaking this year, he replaced them for free, I didn't even have to ask.

My only concern is that his shop is growing, and quality control willl suffer if he doesn't watch it. On the plus side, his receptionist is a total babe.

Different story with my Ford. My warranty just expired, thank god, and I'm happy I'll never have to take it to the dealer again!

Oh, and if my post bothers you and you think I should get a Honda. Well PODNA, I have a Honda. An Acura to be exact, and a Bimmer. And when both of those need service I don't have these problems....Hmmmmmmmmm Just seems to be the Porsche guys. And yes I will find someone to look at my problem to my expectations. The normal expectations of getting what you paid for. You sound like your in the Porsche maintenance industry. Are you???

Well I had a BAAAAD experience with a local Porsche 'Specialist' too. But I've had an equally bad experience with the local Saab dealer. So I don't chaulk it up to being a Porsche specific phenomena (hmmm...did i spell that right?). There just aren't enough good mechanics to go around...and not enough dealers/shops that care enough to get them and keep them. You have two choices...keep on searching for a good one (PCA and Rennlist members can help here) or plan on getting your hands dirty (Rennlist members are particularly helpful here!).

Yeah Steve, I'm going to have to go back to the days of working on the SAABS. I did not want to do that but looks more like what I'm going to have to do. To bad I can't find a mechanic that will do house calls. I have a pretty nice garage with a full compliment of metric tools. The only thing I don't have is a lift. Oh well, I can dream...

I still have a major issue with what I'll call "transmission noise" that I never had before the clutch was changed. I'm beginning to think it might not even be the transmission and maybe the torque tube is shot. I just get a lot of gear rattle under light loads in 2nd and 3rd, or under load at 2000 rpm in 3rd (don't normally drive this way but it's one way to make the noise) it sounds like something is going to explode back there.

Might just be time for a 968 transmission and torque tube
