I think I'm going to get one of my dad's 993 switchblades and put my 944 key in it. They snap right in no problem. For some reason he said he doesn't like it that much so he'll give me his spare one. Would be nice to get it wired to the locks, but then again, I don't have a remote for the locks right now anyways! I might care more if I was paying $80 for it though.
Thinking about an aftermarket remote system...

Found this site that has a pic of the 993 switchblade key. Ironically, it's a DIY site for converting to a keyhead that's similar or identical to the 944 keyhead.

In case anyone wants one of the original lighted key heads, I found www.thepartsbin.com has them for only $15.34.

Actually ninefiveone,
IT IS a 944 keyhead! Just look at the part number: 944-538-041-00 (Lighted Key Cap) List Price $17.00

Dan,
If you want in for about $53, I'll get them both. I'm not too thrilled about doing it for three people @ $70. Let me know.
Maybe some others can chip in with their certificates if they're not going to use them.

I thought this was a dumb idea until today...when I picked up a rental SLK for a few days to zoom around in, and it has a stupid flip key thing... well its fun, i cant stop playing with it.

I've seen these heads with the colour insignia selling for $50US ... now this is a great deal! Thanks!
As for the switchblade ... it sounded very cool until I saw the size of it on that DIY page. Now I think the coolness is outweighed by the size factor. Isn't the one for the beetle much nicer?

I felt the same way... Not just the size but the design itself leaves a lot to be desired...

I am not sure. The VW flip key is ok. It is cool to play with but I still cant get used to the huge ket when driving my cousins car. Also the key is not centered in the housing, making it a bit awkward to use. I think the colored key heads look hot though. Especially since one of my keys is missing an emblem.
