Post OT: F1 vs Champ cars

WEll we finaly have a direct comparison between F1 and camp cars, this weekend, the champ cars ran the same course in Montreal as the F1 boys.

Qualifying for F1:
1:12 to 1:17 and if you take out the last mindari, that is 1:12 to 1:15

Qualifying for Champ cars:
1:18 to 1:21

First off i'm impressed at how close the times are from the front to the back of the pack, but it is just proof that F1 is the best racing series in the world, even if Ferrari has made everyone else look silly.

Yeah...I watched that race last night. I was hoping that F1 would be on at 2:00 in the morning like it usually is on sundays, but alas, I settled for the champ cars. I wonder how the F1 cars would compare to the uberfast GT1 cars of the 80's-90's and the approaching 300MPH cars of the late 60's and 70's on the same tracks. They should have an interleague race or something...pit the F1 cars against the closed roof prototypes of the past on an F1 circuit and LeMans. That would be fun.

did you see the little clip they had on brake rotors? $6000 a rotor and they go through 2 sets one for qualifying and one set for the race...

F1 has become quite boring.Last race at Hungaroring didn't have anything to offer except when Kimi Räikkönen took over Montoya.

Kimi...is by far my favorite driver....do you realize he has only had like 35 total races under his belt? I mean 35 from the start of his racing career...

The biggest problem overall is that the tracks are all sticking in way too many chicanes and other contraptions to slow speeds. By doing this you take out most of the opportunities to pass. I really like the idea of formula one being heavily manufacturer oriented unlikie champ cars. it gives the car builders a stage to show off their mettle. Now if only they would turn the tracks back to the routes they had 15 years ago with the modern safety barriers and such we would be in for some real racing.

Yes Kimi might have only 35 races with "big cars", but he has very long karting experience behind him.He jumped directly from British Formula Renualt to F1...
Nice to watch young fellow countryman who has made it in F1

I may be way off here but I was led to belive that he did not have alot of karting experience.. unlike Schumacher who I was told has been Karting since 8 kimi only has a total of 3 years in racing... TOTAL... including his karting....

I will look online just to make shure I don't show my *** here...

i cant beleive how fast these cars are and how well they handle. dont froget that cart has full slicks and a turbo, and f1 has those ribs in the tires and are natraly aspirated.

i love F1

Deepice,

just discussed with chariman of AKK (head organisation of finnish car racing)(his son plays at the same hocky team as mine) who told me Kimi has over 10 years carting experience according to finnish records.
BTW Kimi's brother Rami is quite succefull rally driver here in Finland.

I stand corrected...but if you factor in his lack of time in the seats of the big cars...and compare that to the seat time of other drivers he really is an incredible talent..

I have been told that very few drivers are born most are made and I believe that Kimi was born...

"i cant beleive how fast these cars are "

Yeah, there's nothing like seeing/hearing/feeling/tasting them in person! I saw them in Montreal two years ago. They are easily 5x faster in person than on TV. And I thought it was just drizzling a little, HAH! Watching the tape on TV later made me realize these guys are even more incredible; it was a torrential downpour!

So then I just had to go see them in Indy a couple months later...

Yes, Danno, unbelievable, hey?
I was in Montreal this year for the F1 race. Some organizers were trying to sell me tickets to come back in August for the Champ race. I was like...hmmmm, no, thanks anyways.

Don't forget that the organizators try to make F1 slkower for teh alst 5 years, Smaller enmgines, grooved tires smaller and lower wing etc etc.
BUT tehy rae still afst.
Now they want to change the tracks in order to make the cars slower -> safer
