ClassJ, could you give a brief explanation on why having no load on a cold engine is bad? I mean, I have no idea on this, but it just sounds weird to me (of course, in the manual it also says to just start driving straight away and not let the engine warm up just standing still... so I do believe you, but I'm just curious)

As far as I know, when there is no load on the crankshaft you increase the wear on the rod bearings and other parts. I am am sure there is a more technical answer than that but the engine needs to work against something.
It is not only the load. It is the fact that when you are driving on the road the rpms climb slowly even when floored.
It is possible with no load on the engine to make the engine rpms snap up and fall very quickly. That is what is bad for the engine.
That is also why engine dynos have water brakes to load up the engine before performing a dyno pull.

I don't want to hassle with uploading it to my webpage b/c of all the security stuff IU has in place for off-campus networking... but if you want to know what the Bursch setup sounds like, drop me an e-mail at micahjones@aol.com and I'll send it out.

micah- in the performance products catalog i think the photo has dual exhaust tips for the 924 but they dont have a photo of the tip for the 944... what kind of tip is on youe exhaust?
also tweeks says that the bursch exhaust is auto trans only for 88-89 cars, any idea why? (performanceproducts catalog says nothing about this)

Is "ur" the same as "eh"?

All, (thanks Ribs)

Here is another video taken today of driving in the car. It's a little over 8mb, and I'm really sorry for the quality. These were on city streets, and I was by no means accelerating hard in the car - this is what the Bursch sounds like just driving from a to b. One thing you'll notice (as did I at first) is that the exhaust really comes alive around 3k or so (and is particularly "mellow" in 1st and 2nd gear.)
Sorry again for the quality (and thanks again, Ribs.)

Dan,
Don't know why tweeks would say that in their catalog... this is especially strange as Perf. Products does not list any differentiation between MY's from '83-'89 for the exhaust.
The Bursch muffler for the 944 is without a polished tip (the muffler itself is black.) At first I was worried about this, and was investigating putting an aftermarket tip on 'er - but the straight-pipe look has grown on me somewhat. I'll see if I can find a good rear pic (or take one..) for you if you want. If you have a perf. products catalog - the "steelpack" it shows for the 944 is exactly what the tip looks like.
HTH,
Micah

I ended up going with the Bursch exhaust but was dissatisfied with the tip. You guys can have a muffler shop weld your factory tip on the muffler for a better look. Though the piping size is smaller on the tip, they can expand it with some sort of pressure bender for it to fit. Also regarding the turbo muffler welded to the Bursch exhaust. I think those of you who have the bursch catback noticed that its actually a Dynomax muffler welded up to it. Bursch is the German divison of Dynomax I'm assuming so other Dynomax mufflers work great regarding compatibility.
If ya'll want a louder sounding 944, cut your turbo muffler off and weld up the Dynomax UltraFlo Aluminized muffler. It WILL BE LOUDER THOUGH DEFINITELY! Add headers and intake and you're lookin for trouble....just like me <img src="graemlins/oops.gif" border="0" alt="[oops]" />

Have you guys had any fitment problems? I have an 85.0 - don't know if the layout is different - that has a bursch catback from the PO. I've found that the sway bar rattles against the pipe (modified pipe to rectify that), but while I was under there I've come to realize that the rear of the cat is higher than the front and rattles against the heatshield. Seems like the hanger tabs on the pipe are a bit too low. Also, the tailpipe is beginning to rust. I was going to fix that with some rustoleum high heat paint. Any other recommendations?
