was told that I need to use the speed rating as specified in the owners handbook, if I don't I need to notify your insurance co, otherwise they will say the car has been modified. (UK here dont forget )

also a bit further and onwards.

rating.
-------------------------------------------------------------------
winter
Speed Symbol "R" For vehicles with a speed capability not exceeding 170 Km/h
(106 Mph)

summer
Speed Category "ZR" For vehicles with a speed capability over 240 Km/h (e.g.
205/40 ZR 17)
--------------------------------------------------------------------

from the NET

When Z-speed rated tires were first introduced, they were thought to reflect the
highest tire speed rating that would ever be required, in excess of 240 km/h or
149 mph. While Z-speed rated tires are capable of speeds in excess of 149 mph,
how far above 149 mph was not identified. That ultimately caused the automotive
industry to add W- and Y-speed ratings to identify the tires that meet the needs
of new vehicles that have extremely high top-speed capabilities.

W 168 mph 270 km/h Exotic Sports Cars
Y 186 mph 300 km/h Exotic Sports Cars

While a Z-speed rating still often appears in the tire size designation of these
tires, such as 225/50ZR16 91W, the Z in the size signifies a maximum speed
capability in excess of 149 mph, 240 km/h; the W in the service description
indicates the tire's 168 mph, 270 km/h maximum speed.

225/50ZR16 in excess of 149 mph, 240 km/h
205/45ZR17 88W 168 mph, 270 km/h
285/35ZR19 99Y 186 mph, 300 km/h
---------------------------------------------------------------------

So questions

my manual says ZR summer R winter

can I go for W's? legally.

whittled down a few

Pirelli Pzero Nero's ZR 91Y (already fitted)
TOYO Proxes t1-r w 92
Conti sport contact (Porsche N1) zr 92 (what does the Porsche n1 mean?)
Michelin +pilot Exalto zr16 92 y?

hmmmmmmm wow

ta all

It is likely to be different, and not in a good way. What's good for high speed is not necessarily good for Normal driving.

I've heard on other forums about insurers abroad requiring "OEM equivalent" tires, but AFAIK it doesn't matter unless you have a claim resulting from high speeds. This was aslo more in the nature of using S or H in place of V, back when V were the top of the lines.

generally the tradeoff for higher speed rating is a higher rate of tire wear.

any recommendations for an inexpensive tire good to like 130mph that will last longer but still grip well?

currently i have bfg g-force sports and they grip really well and are v rated but they are wearing out after like a year (not due to driving style, have the same exact tires on my infiniti and they are almost worn out too just from freeway driving) and are $90 apiece.

Maybe this can help you out.

Porsche recommends anything V or higher for the car. As long as you stay within that you will be fine. MOST tires available nowadays are Z rated or higher.

I run a set of falken ziex 512 (the new version is 912) and they've held up really well over the last 2 years. I use them year round and they've got good traction under wet and dry conditions. I also have run Yokohoma VR4s; the durability of these tires is quite good, but the wet performance is probably not as great at as the falkens.

If I don't get new wheels before I need tires, these are what I'll be getting. (I might even get them on the 17" wheels, when I get them.)

Good warranty, W speed rated (168mph), and get good ratings.

NEXEN tires are GARBAGE!!! I had a set and the are just cheap and fall apart at the side walls...

The Kumhos are a much better tire... If anything go for a run flat style tire... Cost more but worth it in the event the tire is low on tire pressure...

Also whats the odds of the insurance company coming out to your car and looking at the tires..? I mean seriously that is crazy and a if anything a tire rated for a higher speed rating will have a better handling and control compound and design to the tire meaning "Safer" and i would think that is what an insurance company would want...
