i got laid...
off, that is. after a year and a half of paying me to read rennlist, agilent technologies decided they no longer needed my services. fortunately, their severance package (and CA unemployment) are pretty generous so this means a nice vacation for me. however, without steady income and an expensive apartment with a carport, it is no longer practical for me to own an expensive unreliable vehicle for which it is difficult to find parts or even someone who knows how to work on it.
so my beloved baby is up for sale. please see my other posting for details.
thanks very much to all of you who have provided me with advice and guidance over the last year and a half. i checked out rennlist before i ever looked at my first 944, and what i saw here was one of the biggest selling points of that vehicle--a group of intelligent people so enthusiastic about their common love that they would gladly provide a newcomer with knowledge.
without all of you, i never would have been able to afford to own this vehicle, and my life would be less one awesome experience. keep sharing what you know, and keep these wonderful cars on the road.

Agilent technology's down right screwed themselfs. I knew they were going down hill when they decided it would be a good idea to sell off there medical group to phylips. well when your job is easy you know you will soon be laid off so I hope you land on your feet.

I'm sorry to hear about your "vaction" . . .
Hey, you dont happen to know Dave Roach do you? He works at Agilent (formerly HP) and is worried about loosing his job due to their cutbacks. He drives a 300Z.

Ben, don't kid yourself
when i sold my 951 two years ago i thought it was the last porsche i would drive until finishing my medical residency.
now i'm back in a 944S because i couldn't stay away, and looking forward to graduating to big bucks (and cars) in 2004!!
good luck and don't sell your car unless you absolutely have to.

heheh
i dont think agilent selling their medical division is their reason for their current troubles. i see it as the market being flooded w/ test/instrumentation equipment and for the few that are in the market to buy right now can get the equip at 1/5th the price via dovebid auctions from companies going belly up or "restructuring". the depreciation on test equipment is mind-boggling, BERT's (15 of them) my employeer bought two years ago for 330k now sell for 20k. agilent makes great equipment (well maybe not that infinium DCA heheh) but no ones buying it .
i'm kinda in the same boat, i went to a quartly results meeting that ended in "we are closing the doors to this facility in the fall" that is now pushed up to mid summer. i wish the best for you

hey all,
thanks for your sympathy but really i'm pretty excited about this development. at the age of 24 and recently single i'm in the perfect position to take advantage of this.
since i'm on a library computer and am going to get booted in 15 minutes, i'll save all the philosophizing about why agilent is sinking for later... but yeah, i do know dave roach, he's a cool guy. didn't know he had a Z, though. and the infiniium has the stupidist interface i have ever seen on any piece of test equipment ever.
for all who asked, here are the details of my car, i'll post this in another thread as well. if you are trying to contact me, be patient--i don't have a computer right now so my access is limited. i'll take care of that soon, though.
my beloved baby is up for sale, here are the details:
bone stock dark metallic "baltic" blue 1987 944 turbo with 90k miles
928 wheels, beige leather seats and black dash
right now i am asking $11,000 but i have not yet done sufficient market research to see if this is reasonable. please comment if you think that is too low or high.
me and the car live in santa rosa, but i drive around the bay area from time to time so i *might* be able to bring her somewhere else to be checked out.
features include:
dual air bags, abs, drivers seat power front & rear height adjustment, power windows &
locks, air conditioning, collapsable spare tire with porsche air compressor, rear wiper, 5
piece set of lloyd black floor mats, cd player, colgan bra, upgraded headlights, full set of
paper and electronic factory repair manuals.
maintenance history:
i have owned this vehicle since september '01 and have done all the major work on it
since then. every 944 trouble spot has been inspected and dealt with. all repairs were
done with porsche oem parts wherever possible, and were carried out in accordance with
the advice of rennlist, my mechanic (a past 944 owner), and the factory manuals. since
owning the vehicle, i have replaced:
battery, oil cooler & upper hose, power steering fluid reservior and hose, oil cooler seals
(on engine), every single coolant hose, coolant reservior and cap, timing & balance belts
& rollers, water pump (rebuilt from GPR), thermostat, small fuel line, ignition wires
(jacobs wires with oem dust boots), alternator bearings (rebuilt at an alternator shop) and
voltage regulator (variable voltage, set to 14.4), and accesory belts. i have run mobil 1
15W-50 synthetic oil for the past year and have completely flushed the brake system with
synthetic fluid. i have removed and flushed the radiator and have used VW blue coolant
with distilled water. under hard street driving, oil consumption is about 1 quart per 600
miles.
the stock headlights have been replaced with the kit sold by “iceshark” on rennlist (but
the wiring is stock). this includes cibie e-code lenses and 100/90 watt bulbs. the original
oem dot-approved lenses and bulbs come with the car. these lights are incredible--the
high-power bulbs provide great illumination, while the sharp cutoff of the ecode pattern
prevents blinding oncoming traffic.
the ac blows icy cold and was fully serviced 2 years ago. i just tweaked all the
microswitches for the sunroof last month so it now operates perfectly. the cruise control
is not functional right now, but i have re-soldered the brain and will reinstall soon to see
if the problem is fixed. the front brakes need new pads and rotors; i am planning on
doing this job in the next week or two. if you want to buy this car and want specific
brake pads, let me know.
i have a full set of service receipts for the entire life of the vehicle. they indicate that
prior to my ownership the following service was performed:
right before my purchase:
tune up including new air filter, cap&rotor, dme relay, ac service.
since ‘95:
complete clutch job (bearings, presure plate, resurface flywheel, rear crank seal), cam
gaskets, turbo water pump, both large fuel lines and all front seals.
since ‘90:
rod bearings (done under warranty when oil cooler seals replaced), oil pan gasket, engine
mounts.
damage/areas of concern:
both rear fenders are dented slightly (no paint damage) right behind each rear wheel.
apparently one of the past owners had trouble backing into his garage. the dash has
“medium” sized cracks. the driver’s seat has a 2” hole in the left bolster. the nose and
hood have some small paint chips and the hood paint also shows some faint crows-foot
cracks. the tires are dayton “daytona zr” and are at the end of their usable life. the cd
player is hooked up to the stock speakers of which the rears are shot. the windshield
washer doesn’t work.
as for pictures, i took a few with a friend's digital camera last week but he hasn't emailed them to me yet, and i have some issues with file managing since i don't have a computer. all that will be straightened out soon so stay posted.
feel free to email me with any questions.

Ben,
Sorry to hear about the tough situation at Agilent. I work in sales for a s/w company in San Jose and I'm seeing significantly more companies dying this year than last year, at least for the area that I handle.
I'm not sure when technology will come back again, especially for Silicon Valley. All these networking startups that used to exist just aren't there anymore and the VC's aren't funding any more companies of late, regardless of market segment.
If you're a h/w designer, Cisco in Petaluma might have openings in their optical group. The rest of the guys up there (DSC/Alcatel, Calix, Gluon, AFC, Valo, Mahi, Terawave, Nokia, ...) aren't too healthy.
