Can't lock driver's side from inside?
I was just reading through my owner's manual and saw that you can't lock the driver's side door from the inside. I was about to tear the door apart this weekend and try to "fix" that.. (Funny, it also says you should have the doors locked when you are driving.. how??)
Anyway, I don't care much for this "feature." Is there a way I can make my door lock from inside?

It's a design feature to prevent you from locking your keys in your car. Tough to do if you can't lock from inside, then close the door. Driver side can only be locked with the key.
gotta love those german engineers!

You sure that it can't be locked from the inside? The driver's door on my 924S is just like the driver's door on my old late-1980's Honda: It can only be locked when closed.
I can lock the driver's door from either the inside or the outside as long as the door is closed. If the door is open (i.e. latch released) then I can't lock it, not from the inside and not from outside. Unless I'm terribly mistaken, this is how it should work.
On the 914, the door unlocks when you close it unless you hold the pull while closing the door. This is the same as my friend's mid-1980's Mazda.

Nope, owner's manual says you can't lock the door from inside. Ironic, I suppose, that I'm going to have to tear apart the passenger door because I can't lock it from the OUTSIDE. I'm loving all these interesting little quirks.

I like the 924S's lock setup better than what you've described, though I like the 914's setup best.

Hmm....my 86 can be locked from the inside...and what would be the point of central locking if you couldn't lock it while inside the car? I could understand a power lock/release for the passenger side so that the driver could operate it though if that was the case and a locked door is safer in a crash than an unlocked one (hence why the manual would state better safety with doors locked). Mine will let me lock it from the inside with the door closed and I do not have the central locking or alarm on my 86 Turbo.
I agree that it's a great safety feature to keep you from locking your keys in the car since it will not work while the door is open as just like for the interior light, there is likely a small "button" that is pushed to prevent the lock from being pushed down while the door is open and once the door is closed, you can actuate it and should be able to internally or externally (with the key from the outside of course...hehe).
I'm too short and small to be able to rest my arm anywhere near that lock button
Cheers!

I've an '86 and hiting the lock button locks everything, including driver's side. Sounds like yet another Porsche feature that goes through 10 evolutions over its lifetime...

You can't lock the door from inside with the door open. This is so you don't lock your keys in it. If you are in the car with the door closed it will lock like any other car. When you're out of the car, the only way to lock it is with the key.
I don't have central locking so I don't have a clue how that works.

Yeah this drove me crazy so I installed a cheap alarm basically for keyless entry (removed the shock sensor). It only cost me $45 and my time to install it. Soooo much better. If anyone wants it I created an aftermarket alarm installation guide.

JLeake, I'd be interested in seeing your tutorial/write up. I have had power locks on every car for the last 10 years except this 951 and would love to have them on this car, but I wasn't about to lose the car I have over power locks
Cheers!
