Default camshaft performance?

i have been thinking that many cars have the option of aftermarket camshafts for near drop in performance gains.

i know you can send your camshaft out to get knife endged, its costly work and makes the car less "drivable"

but are there any other options? like from another car or custom makers?

this is pertaining to 8v NA's

I have the webcam camshaft in my car. Seems to work well on the butt dyno.

you dont get a camshaft knifeedged, that is a crankshaft you are talking about. the stock crankshaft weighs like 50 or 60lbs iirc and that causes alot of forces at 6000rpm. knife edge helps it prevent oil frothing, along with lower weight meaning it can rev a little quicker (less inertia to overcome)

a knifeedged crankshaft and oil scraper would be nice. do they make oil scrapers for our cars?

Oil scrapers are a PITA to fit though. It took me an hour or two with a dremmel to get the clearance right on all sides...

a windage tray would be a nice addition between the oil pan and block...

That is an old myth. Knife edging accelerates the oil into the crankshaft.

If you don't believe me look at any crankshaft from any major manufacturer, all which have unlimited engineering resources. None are knife edged.

Also it does not cause a lot of forces (unless it is extremely unbalanced, not the case in the 944). It acts as a damper, that is why a crankshaft has parts called counter-weights.

There's not much out there for the 944 NA. Maybe another poster might have one or two more places that make them. I don't have a NA so I haven't fully researched all the possible cam manufacturers. Most of the parts houses sell Web Cams. I know of a few other places and engine builders that have their own cams, but their for the 951 or 968. I'm sure they're capable of having a cam made, but their research is based on a different induction system. It's probably best to stick with the ones with a track record.

thanks for the links, i got the cam and crank flipped.....lol...

anyways i looked into webcam which seems to be about 300$ cheaper running at about 500$ for a new one!
http://www.jmengines.com/camshafts.htm says it requires motortronic! thats no bueno!

although they only offer 2 types. factor spec, and upgraded. i wonder is the upgraded on would bet better with Turbo Valve springs! i was pondering redoing my head this summer and putting in turbo springs, clean all valves, new seals. just some good general TLC....possibly combined with one of these cams and a new exhaust slowly im trying to repair and upgrade and school and money warrents. keeping this car, as of this point is still cheaper than going and buying a boxster for 12k.....although the newness of it is what i really like

i was looking at matching a new 4-1 header or 4-2-1, i dont want to lose my low end though....but mine is all rusted and stuff. cat delete pipe, and possibly keep stock muffler to help keep sound profile close to the same.

phil, if you have an early car with cast exhaust manifold you could switch to the tubular style 4-2-1headers and they wont rust.

whats the problem with motronic? you already have that!

DERRRR i feel like a dumb F*ck now...i forgot that motortronic is the DME....i was thinkin megasquirt when i posted.

yes i have an 1984....i was thinking 4-2-1 or 4-1......i know either way i will use header wrap on it to help insulate, i have seen some tremendiously cooler air in the engine bay do to insulation.

i was thinking 4-1 because it makes for great Wideband O2 sensor area...or so it seems

also it gets rid of the hot air next to the acutal engine and oil cooler...which has to be good
