Post 1987 944S Problems/Questions

OK, here goes...

1) Removable Roof - Had the roof off yesterday, went to put it back in and the motor to lock it down failed. Before doing it manually per the owner's manual I check the wires and connections in the hatch area. It all looked connected (in my unexpert opinion). Gave up and locked it in place manually per the Manual. **BTW the Owner's Manual says to move the bolt "clockwise" to shut the roof when it SHOULD say "counterclockwise!" At this point, the Manual says to bring the car in to a Porsche dealer to have the mechanism fixed. My trusty Hayne's manual does not even discuss the removable roof. Can I fix this thing or do I need to take it in?

2) Rear Hatch Release - The release button inside the driver's footwell does not release the hatch anymore. I checked the cables and connections in the back and they all look OK. Any hints or advice?

3) Clutch Pedal Boot leak - I was looking up under the dash and saw that the rubber boot at the firewall was covered with black greasy/oily fluid. It was dripping off of the boot. What is it? The clutch works fine, no noise, no problems as far as I can tell. Plenty of fluid. Should I worry?

Thanks!

You may have blwon a fuse: I believe both the rear hatch and sunroof may be connected to the same fuse. It's worth a shot...

Not sure of the clutch pedal oil.

Thanks for the reply. I checked the fuses and they are OK. These are not "big deal" items. The car runs and functions fine. I just hate not being able to fix this stuff on my own.

Thanks!

ooh another S in CT, where are you located Elvis? or have i already asked... hmm...

theres a couple tutorials on fixing the sunroof around, check tech-session.com or pelican-parts.com for em. its complicated and annoying, all of us just basically pray that ours never breaks. whats with the hatch? when you press the button do you hear the motor turning? maybe its stuck? go back there, pull the carpet, and pull on the cable to see if it moves the lock/hinges. if it does, but the motor just doesnt turn.. well.. its an electrical problem .. and thats not fun. dunno about the leak, are you sure its a leak? maybe its just normal? wipe it clean and see if it comes back.

Simon:

Thanks for the response. I will look for the tutorials on those sites you mentioned. What a pain in the butt!

As for the hatch, the motor does not even turn. I checked and it all looks connected. I guess I am about to take a crash course in Porsche electrical systems... What fun!

I wiped the clutch boot yesterday and will check later today.

Am I stupid to use this car for everyday transportation???

I will be attending the PCA autocross 9/22/02 at Smith & Wesson in MA. I will be in the slow, white 944S. See you there?

Thanks!

My roof quit working and after checking everything I could think of, last was pulling and checking rear relays-I pushed the button one day and it worked <img src="graemlins/c.gif" border="0" alt="[ouch]" /> . If you just put it back in what about the switch at the front? Maybe it didn't align.

I had that fluid leak also, it turned out that the clutch needed adjusted-always had pressure on the master cylinder.

Triscadek:

Pardon my ignorance but, WHAT switch at the front (for the roof panel)? Also, I will investigate the clutch adjustment you mentioned. Thanks!

Simon:

I think you may have me mixed up with someone else. No Subarus in Fairfield for me. I cannot wait to do my first auto-x. I am trying to get used to the idea of shifting often. I would leave my old Mustang in 2nd gear for most CT Autocross and Rally Team autocrosses.

On the roof panel there is a tab in the front center, when installed that presses on a triangular switch at the front of the opening that keeps you from operating the gear mechanism with the roof out.

Also to test the 2 relays at the motor you can switch them with the heater fan relay. All 3 are 87/87a relays.

At the time of the leak my pedal had no freeplay.
