Post Rear Rotor Play

Went to grind of 1/16" out of section of my rear wheel well, slight rub on the drivers side w/ 255-40-17, and upon re-installing tire/rim I noticed a slight amount of up/down play at the rotor. I'm not getting any bearing noise and the axle bolts all looked fine. Could it be that large nut at the end of the axle be my problem? I have read before that guys doing auto-x have had them loosen up. I haven't hit the Haynes yet to see how it all bolts up but I'm assuming that nut pulls everything tight.

My 84 944 has a 36mm nut on the axle stub. I had a inner bearing race crack.

Is there a difference in nut size between early and late model? I now that the steel arms used a cotter pin and I have aluminum which has no pin.

The 1-1/4" nut on the stub axle was loose by about a 1/4 turn. It tightened up the play I was getting but being that the bearing wasn't properley seated in the race for a few miles....No noises but something for the winter maintenance list.
