Default How much would you pay for a 924S needing "only" a clutch

I'm looking to buy a 924S which, in the owners words, "needs 'ONLY' a clutch". The price is listed as $1 (craigslist ad). It's a 1988, claims to only have 29k miles. Anybody familiar? I'm always wary of cars I can't get in and drive.

considering a by-the-book clutch job is about $1500-2000....

but if yer DIY, u can change it for just the price of the part and a weekend.

real question is...if the clutch is shot and the car isn't driveable, what ELSE is wrong.

Yep, that's the kicker. All of the things you can notice during a test drive--brakes, steering, suspension, engine / turbo problems. Given the $1500-ish discount, what's an unknown condition '88 S worth?

If its a low miles car its possible it just needs a clutch because it has the rubber center failure. The real question is what else needs work if it has been sitting for a very long time. How many miles has the car been driven in recent years and what other maintenance has been performed?

The guy's not smart to try to sell it this way. If it's truly a 29K car, and the only thing wrong is the clutch, then the seller should fix the dang clutch or else expect to cut price a LOT.

Right, it's an unknown car. I'm not getting much info out of the seller. Can't even get the VIN to verify mileage. Feel free to check it out, it's on Atlanta's CL.

Greg--my thoughts exactly. $1000 is a good investment into a 29k mile (original) car. But not a good investment into a 129k or 229k car (or mileage rolled-back one).

Remember, the 924 odometer only reads 5 digits. He may be trying to pull it of as a "29,000" mile car when its actually a "129,000" or "229,000" mile car...

Yep, that's what I was thinking. Hence, he's not forthcoming with the VIN. BTW, just found out he wants only $7k (that includes a discount for the clutch). No affiliation. http://atlanta.craigslist.org/nat/cto/1496851604.html

Is an '88 924S really worth this much?

Yep, that's what I was kind of expecting, something in the $1500 range. BTW, I was looking to trade my '68 BMW 2002Ti. That seemed like an even trade until he said he wanted cash on top and then I found the other ad and... whoa!

cmon guys.. this is the "vaunted" '88 with its extra 10hp.. surely its work $7K

ok.. But if the body condition is great (can't tell in tiny pics on a rainy day) it could corroborate the sellers low mileage claim. That said, it may be more likely a $3K car at best? (assuming all the electrics work)

But again, its a 20+ year old car.. it will need other things like shocks, bushings etc etc.

Who the hell ruins a clutch in 29K miles?

If it was driven hard enough to ruin the clutch in that low of miles, I'd be worried about other things being shot as well.
