How much would you pay for a 924S needing "only" a clutch

If it was driven hard enough to ruin the clutch in that low of miles, I'd be worried about other things being shot as well.
A 20-yr-old rubber clutch can fail regardless of mileage.

I agree that rubber bushings, etc., can fail... but that's generally bushings exposed to the elements, oil, etc. A "sealed" (except for heat, I guess) bushing should have a shelf life of longer than 29k + 20 years, I'd think. Anyway, bottom line is that it looks like $7k is in the effenkrazy category. And he gets no extra credit by emailing me back (after I asked for the VIN): " You are not going to pay me what I want for the car. So, lets not waste each others time!"

I bought a non-running '88 924S a month ago for $500. I've put about $1500 into it and it's about ready to drive on the street. That Atlanta car is not a 29K car or it wouldn't be sitting out in the rain with leaves all over it. The seller is in for a rude awakening. In good mechanical condition with some minor cosmetics and decent interior that car is worth $3500 max. That's including the premium for the higher compression (which does make a difference, put a chip in it and hang on!). Deduct $1500 for the clutch job and you've got a $2000 car. I'd email him explaining all that (provide a link to this thread) and offer $1500 cash to take it off his hands. Be sure the engine runs well, there's service records and clean car fax.

I feel sneaky having a conversation behind this poor guy's back and then emailing him the link. But you're right--he's hallucinating or is being purposely sneaky. It becomes even more fun if he joins the forum and posts, as well.

He's absolutely right; it isn't our sworn solemn duty to educate everyone selling a P-car as to what WE think their car is worth. If he dropped the price to $3k, or $2k, would you be interested? I doubt it.

My view is that it would actually enlighten the seller to real world prices on these 25-30 year old cars. They're at the bottom of their value now and some would say that they'll never gain value like a 911. I look for the rarer sub-models and variants with low production numbers. When I look at the '88 924S - I see a more desirable car. But not so desirable to double or triple the average price!

Well... yes. If he lowered it to $3k I'd take the time to go see it for sure.

$500... Pull the motor, do the clutch and rod bearings, and have a decent car for around $1200 total. Figure it's only worth around $2000 in good shape, and you're putting in $800 or so worth of labor yourself.

Yup, I seriously doubt a 20+ year old low-end Porsche-in-a-VW's-skin only has 29k miles on it.

Absolutely not. $1-2k in good condition, maybe a little more if it's in awesome condition.

More reason to suspect that it really has 129k or 229k miles on it.

My '87, bought last fall, had a new clutch put in at 36K miles because the original rubber centered one "just failed" with age. Not uncommon, imho. BTW, I bought mine with 38K miles. Clearly just a "weekend" car. Same could be said of the 924S in question.
