I'm about to remove the original hood crest and replace the shrunken rubber gasket with a new one. I'm a bit concerned with busting this old piece of plastic so was wondering if anyone could tell me about where the hold down posts are so I am fairly accurate when I try and pry it off with a pair of putty knives.
I assume the posts are held by some sort of clip under the pannel and hope that clip won't scrape too much of the plastic off when I pull it off.

Never mind, it's off.
Hey, this this is cast brass or something. Mine is sort of bent at the bottom which is why I thought it was plastic and the shrinking rubber seal had bowed it up. Anyone tried to straighten theirs up without busting the cloisonne?

Yeah, Paragon has them for $25 new. I just ordered the gasket from them today but thought I better get the thing off and quick order a new crest if I busted the old one, which I thought was plastic.
The more I look at this the more I think it is just the casting isn't exactly high art quality and they are probably all this way. I'm not going to mess with it and just see what it looks like with the new gasket. The old one was in pretty sad shape.

Has anyone replaced their original hood crest with a 993-style crest? These have the "Porsche" logo in black lettering. I was just wondering if the 993-style would fit.

They are supposed to be the same size. I thought of ordering the new style too, since mine was bent from a pry bar!

Pry bar, well that is what the local Porsche dealer and I concluded must be wrong with mine as it doesn't fit to the pannel worth a darn. Funny thing is the paint wasn't damaged.
Anyway, here is the scoop. I looked at the 993.559.211.00 badge and compared to my old one and it will fit just perfect. This is the one with black in the PORSCHE casting across the top of the badge.
I was told the old style that we have is no longer being made although the dealer did have a Taiwanese knock off in stock. You can tell the quality difference. Not a big deal, but you can tell even with a brand new knock off. Apparently, there are some of the old Porsche originals still floating around for sale from existing inventory.
Be careful if you order from E-Bay auction as you will probably get the knockoff.
Anyway, Tweeks seems to have the best price on the 993 OEM at a tad under $40 so I ordered one since my original is bent all to hell.

I have, yes. They are the same size. The new gasket is a b$%&^ to get under the crest. I ended up paying the body shop for their patience to put it on as I ran out.

When I first bought my 951 it needed a gasket for the crest. When I put a new gasket on the badge it slipped off as I pushed the badge pins into the holes on the nose panel. I was very impatient when removing the badge a second time to re-fit the gasket and one of the pins snapped off. Ironic I suppose.
A quick trip up to Partsheaven and I had found my new hood crest. It was on a wrecked '87 924S and was in fantastic shape (only $10 too). Unfortunately a week later it was stolen along with the gasket. I put the old one back on, adhered with only one pin. I bought a replica, and although it looks great, it is more convex than the original and just doesn't look the same.
One trick you might try in order to get the gasket to fit is to heat it with a hairdryer beforehand. It will fit over the edge of the badge, but it's a very tight fit.

Well, I got the new 993 crest and it looks pretty nice, the big thing being it isn't bent all up by some hooligan trying to steal it.
The Porsche across the top has black lacquer in a grove cast/forged within the letters so it is easy to read. Though I doubt anyone other than a fanatic will notice.
That rubber gasket is a little bugger to get on. I took a small square plastic planter shell (the ones you get flowers in from the nursery) and poked some small holes in the side for the badge posts. Stuck the gasket and badge in and worked the gasket over the badge with the curved end of a paper clip and dull letter opener so as to not cut the rubber. Got it on fairly easy. It would be hard to do on the car and I think you would scratch the paint.
