Default oil question... here we go again!

I hope not but here is my question. I've read a whole bunch of posts regarding what oil to use on my S2. I'm even more confused now.

I live in so cal. Local temp is +30 F to about +117 F. What oil can I find at my local Wallyworld or Autozone for my car?

I've never run synthetic on it, only dino oil. Castrol GTX.

Any suggestions?

What does your oil pressure gauge read at idle when it's that hot?

Castrol 20w-50 is fine. When I was using synth (because my PO had it in the car), I was using Mobil 1 15w-50.

I'm using Brad Penn 20w-50, but good luck finding that at the local autozone. Guy here in town who does lots of early 911 stuff sells it.

I use Penzoil 20w-50. The Porsche mechanic I take my car to recommended it. He actually worked for Porsche years ago and has over 30 years experience with Porsches. I haven't had any problems yet and don't foresee having any. 20w-50 is the way to go.

I googled FTW a few months ago, found out what it meant.. would look silly to ask for 20-50 ftw... lol

My gauge is at about 2 when hot at idle, almost to 5 at any other RPM.

The reason I didn't name a specific brand is it is a matter of brand loyalty/prefernce more than anything else (exception is 99cent oil )

Unless you are going racing any of the majors are fine. If that is incorrect someone please inform all of my cars of this...they do not seem to care.

I buy a couple cases of Brad Penn Racing 20W-50 online and I'm good for a couple years. My PO used Mobil 1 synthetic and since going to the Brad Penn my oil pressure is more consistent and I'm not seeing a few very slow leaks that I saw with the pure synthetic (Penn is a synthetic/dino mix) and my engine sips oil now (usually have to add about a quart between oil changes @ ~3500 miles).

Well worth the $$ IMHO...all the right ZDDP goodness and a high quality product. When it comes to oil in a 20+ year high performance engine...it wasn't the place that I wanted to skimp. It's not worth it for a few more bucks per quart...especially when you're changing it yourself...what's that like $15 more a change??

When my 87 na was new and under warranty the local dealer used Quaker State 20-50. I have stuck with this ever since. It seems ok at 130,000 miles. I also got an 88 951 3 years ago from the original owner. He always used 20-50, but a variety of brands including Quaker State. That is what I use on both now. Lindsay sells an additive which I intend to start using, which includes the ZDDP that i keep hearing about. I have no idea how much ZDDP the off the shelf Quaker State 20-50 has. I have read that switching from dino oil to synthetic increases the risk of oil leaks, including mixing with coolant. I am reluctant to switch for this reason. I have 39 DE days between the two cars and so far so good. I generally shift at 6,000 RPMS. I am not sure what is best. I am adding an oil temp gauge and Kiss oil cooler to the turbo. With the input I have at this point, I think Quaker State 20-50 + Lindsay's additive will be ok as long as the oil temp is 240 or lower. I hope this helps some, any other thoughts are welcome.

Does anybody use Rotella oil in their 944's?
I've been told to use the VR1 racing oil in 20w50 because it has all the zincs and sulfur these engines need.
Any truth to this or can we use standard oil?
Right now I'm using the Rotella oil but am thinking about changing to the VR1 in it's place.

VR1 20w-50 is what I use as well. I left out the manu in my first resposne to keep from starting a brand war

Rotella is good as well, especially in a higher mileage cnosidereing all the detergents in diesel oil. Either way you are fine, IMO.
