Hi Phil823,

Thanks for the suggestion but boxsters in Australia are more expensive than 968s which are more expensive than 944s - say $50k v $30k v $9k.

Cheers

Dave

Peanut, yes a 928 did come to my mind. I've had my 1990 S4 for over 5 years and it is a very reliable and nice car. If we don't find a 944 manual solution to the issue then a 928 may well be the way to go - or an auto 944?

Was there ever any such thing as a 944 Turbo with automatic transmission? I think not.

Dave if you want a manual 944 then go for it. You need to find someone who has a flair for fabrication and works out of a shed. I'd look for a biker that has built a trike or someone that builds racecars . They are bound to have the technical and design capabilities and the tools and equipment to do this simple job.

My first port of call would be to find any manual car that has already been converted and use that as the basis of your design. maybe phone round the scrap yards. That way you are not re-inventing the wheel and it is more likely to pass government legislation and MOT checks etc.
Good luck

Actually, peanut raises an important consideration wrt road worthiness checks: best talk to the RTA early on and find out what the rules are for registering such a converted vehicle.

I think a nice 928 is the go, myself. Instead of spending all that effort and money on hand clutch mods, you could be spending all that effort and money on the fun stuff! And a really nice 928 is _so_ cool.

if you get an auto 944, how easy would it be to swap in a tiptronic trans from a 968? assuming you could find one

There was a guy on the turbo forum that was contemplating a 968 tiptronic into his 951 due to health problems. I don't think he ever folowed through with it, but he might have done some good research. IIRC the hardest thing would be dealing with the ECU. I don't know if the tip has a seperate ECU or if it's integral to the 968 DME.
