1983 keeps breaking heater control assembly
Hey all, I wanted to share a strange problem im having. When I got my 944, the heat was stuck on. I discovered that the plastic peice of the heater control assembly had snapped off from the housing. This is the part that holds the cable in place, once it breaks, the cable just moves back and forth. I replaced the assembly with a new one.
The other day I'm driving and I notice the heat is on, but the lever is in full cold. Sure enough, the same exact failure occured. The plastic mounting tab broke off and the cable is free. This unit is less than 2 years old. I don't understand why these keep breaking. I ordered a new heater control valve, and im going to try and lube the cable up in some way. Any ideas why these keep breaking?

CHEAP PLASTIC and HEAT. I read someplace where a gent said he was going to install a plumbing shut off valve. Open during cold weather for heater to work and closed when warm weather starts. I had a good laugh at first, but then that is not a bad idea.

Are you sure you installed it correctly so that no vertical load is being applied to the control arm? It takes almost no force to move it, so it shouldn't be breaking. Check to make sure the control wire isn't bent, and putting some kind of vertical load on the arm.

yea thats what I was thinking. Its installed correctly as far as I can tell. I tried moving the cable in and out by hand, and there's a fair amount of resistance but not enough to break the plastic, IMO. I'll do what I can this time, and if it breaks again.....I dunno...
