Default New S2 Cab owner need tires

Just bought a 90 944 S2 cab (white with navy blue top and 65000 mi) have done the timing belt water pump etc. Have a couple of questions. Need to put some new tires on it. My 86 944 turbo had 225 50 16 tires F and 245 45 on the rear this one has 205 55 and 225 50. Can you go up a size on a S2 and what tires do you guys recommend. Not a daily driver but may do some mild DE events if I can find a bolt in rollbar.

Yes... 225/245 combo will fit. Can be harder to find tires in those sizes (particularly the 245-45-16), depending on brand or compound preferences.

Congrats on the cab!

Have had great luck with Sumitomo HTRZIII. Have them on the 911 and 944. Go to TireRack and check out the reviews, very helpful, good prices.

_ First welcome to Rennlist_ I think it will be nice if you move up a notch & go with with the same size tires you had on the turbo. 17" will look nice on your cab, tires I will go with "Falken 542" As far as I'm concern it's a very good tire all around either wet or dry condition ,noise is very minim & road holding is great, since your only gone do mild even & it's not a daily driver I realy think those will be a good choice. The reason I,m saying this is because I had them on my 944 & now are my road conctact one my 968& bhva been very satisfy with FALKEN , hope it will help cheers!

Racer - I check in the combo you sugested Falken have the 225-45-17 & 245-45-17 in both the 452 & Rt-615 applications but was wondering if he could go with 255-40 in the rear or will it be to wide for is s2?

Adrian- that piece of info as been around for a long time ,I still don't think going up to 17" on a S2 cab will hurt it,if it was the case 75% of the 944 na-944 turbo 944s2 & 968 on the road today should be off it & consider unsafe. And why did Porsche in 91 fit the s2 cab turbo with 17" wheels with 225/50 &245/45 tires.Going to 18" over on any of them is to my opinion only for look purpose & (over doing it),Of course I'm not a wheels -tires expert .

I cant help you with the tires but check out the "what have you done to your 944 S2 Cabriolet" thread in the 944 & 944S2 forum. There is a post with some good pics of a nice roll bar in a cab.
Post some pics too. I like that color combo!

968 cabs were available with 17" wheels, so that size is fine. I know more than a few 968 owners who went to 18" and went back to 17" because of noise and ride degradation.

Ernie, I know the information has been arund for a while. However, I have offered the information "as is", both sides of the coin.
also dont forget the s2 cab is significantly heavier that a coupe, maybe the 91 s2's had the mod;s as detailed I dont know.
again you pays your money and takes your choice. if youve read the whole page then it should be pretty obvious.

again i can't talk about the 968's cabs with 17's, again, though they may "LOOK" the same, there are differances. and I cant gtee or confirm what chassis parts/changes are significantly different to the 44 / 68.

Will it cause a problem,, TBH probably not, IMHO i'd place my chips with the designer of the car, never bet against the house, it always wins.

peace out

Thank for the reply- adrian- and I,ll admit that I'm one of the first who hesitate to change the factory way of doing things but like I say there is so much 944 on the road with 17" wheels & up to now peoples don't seem to have any problems with the upgrade, otherwise we will certainly hear about it,I also think that any 944 NA owners should limite themself to a 16" ugrade going over migth bring that cool look but I beleive it will have negative effects on the entire car, 17" should be limited to 951-S2 & 968. My 944 NA came with fuchs 16" 205-55 frt 225-50 rear and found out over a period of 25 years it was the best combo you could have, either for ride or handling streetwise. And like Damian mention going overboard will certainly degrade the ride.(What I mention here does not apply to modified or track cars) I'm talking stock street.

Lots of good info here. Thank all of you for your help. The one post on finding 245 45 16's is right on Tire Rack on has two tires that size (Continental ContiSportContact (Ultra High Performance Summer and ) Fuzion ZRi (Ultra High Performance Summer) neither one of which are rated that well. Any other suggestions
