What's recommended for water pump gasket sealant? I've got a tube of RTV silicone, is that suitable?

I use the red (hi temp) RTV.

You can put it on dry, no sealant needed. If you do want to use something for piece of mind though, use aircraft permatex (comes in a small white bottle). It goes on thin like water instead of a thick rtv, and seals better.

Permatex Ultra-Grey and Ultra-Blue is what we've been using on our race cars with great results. The Ultra-Grey is more commonly known as Hondabond. It's a good adhesive and generally wont leave little silicon "snakes" inside of things like the Black or especially Red Permatex does. It also works well for sealing a number of common 944 oil leaks from the outside, and putting life back into 25 year old oil pan gaskets.

Hylomar Racing Blue... I use it on the water pump gasket and the camshaft housing gasket.

No leaks after 15 plus years.
