Exclamation **Fuel Gauge Sender failed !!**

The sender in our 85.5 944NA failed and now the panel instrument reads empty all the time. Anyone successfully repair the sender? Or is a replacement item only??

I had mine get stuck at 3/4 full shortly after I bought my car. After checking the sender unit, I found that the resistance wire that the float level makes contact with had started to cut into the contact area on the float which caused it to fetch up and hang onto the resistance wire. I carefully smoothed the notch the wire cut into the contact with a burnishing tool until the float would easily slide up and down the sender unit. So far this has lasted 10,000 miles already and counting.

Good post Dan - now if we only had pictures....

... and I loved your use of "fetch up" - hadn't seen that before.
