my 68 firebird is a classic. it has been worth the same amount from about 1980 till last year. it is just starting to appreciate now, and the rapid risers are the ones with big blocks and oddball options that the collectors want.

the people with the money arent the ones that look at classic cars, the are the ones thaty buy collector cars. the 944 has very little upside collector potential. it may be a "classic" but probably wont be considered a collectible in my lifetime.

check out what a late 60's 911 goes for and what a 83 carrera rs goes for.

in PA cars don't become classics unless they are 20 years old

thats not what american collector insurance, american hobbyist, or geico's subdivision says. i checked yesterday.

i think i had collector insurance when the firebird was about 18 years old. not sure i waited till it was 20.

the fun part is trying to get a straight answer from these companys as to what they will take. two companies said no to the rx7 convertible, why because its a mazda. they dont care that less rx7 convertibles were made than 944s. another said the 944 was made in too much volume, but would take the rx7.

go figyah

FWIW, the European DOT standard is 20 years for a car to be considered a classic or apply for "historic vehicle" plates.

Insurance companies aren't much of a guideline, since their policies vary so much.

Check this site out. I was looking into getting a classic plate for my 86 944. it is 15 years in PA. I don't see an upside, you pay more for the plate and still need to pay for inspections. In Ga your car is a classic at age 25. I have classic plates on the Jag and I believe that they cost $15 opposed to $25 for a normal plate.
