Question Metalic sound from rear

Hello

I am about to purchase an '88 944S. I took it home for a test drive, and noticed that there was a metalic resonating sound coming from the rear in a certain rev range.

I am very new to the 944 car, so please forgive my lack of technical description.

I know the car has a new clutch (it's manual). The sound is definitely from the rear of the car, and when the car is stationary, there is a 'ticking' noise - knocking is probably closer but not quite a knock - but I think that comes from the engine bay ....

The resonating noise seems to occur either when accelerating, or gearing down under braking.

If I didn't know any better I would say it sounded like the diff on my landcruiser !!!

Any ideas at all?
