Difference between 951 oil cooler housings?

I've been reading all these threads on the Oprearly and later style and still am not sure if I need a new sleeve. I have an 83 944 with the old 3 piece OPRV and I was able to score a later 1 piece from an 86 at the boneyard for, are you ready, $2.26

I've been reading all these threads on the Oil Pressure Relief Valves (OPRV) the old 3 piece style and the later 1 piece and hope someone can answer a couple of questions from experience. I have an 83 944 with the old 3 piece OPRV and I was able to score a later 1 piece from an 86 at the boneyard for, are you ready, $2.26. I had to laugh when the cashier told me the price. Anyway I took out the 3 piece OPRV and looked in the hole. Looks like there's a sleeve there already and am not sure if this means I do not need to install a sleeve (see pictures).Anybody know for sure if I need another sleeve in the hole or is the one that was in there when the 3 piece OPRV is all i need? I also wanted to take the new 1 piece OPRV apart and replace the internal o-ring. It has a snap ring at the top (see picture) and I am not sure if I need to remove that to get the OPRV apart.Seems pretty tight as I tried to pull it part by hand it is not coming apart. Followed the instructions on other threads, but none mentioned removing the snap ring. Any help would be appreciated

944 Tech Bulletin #3 says that the retrofit one-piece pressure relief valve (PN 944 107 035 11) "... was introduced as a retrofit to repair earlier engines from 1983 to 1986 along with the early 924S". There is no mention of needing to change the sleeves in these engines. I didn't and it seemed to work fine for me.
The bulletin does, of course, stresses the need for proper alignment of the bore using an alignment tool. It also says that the unit is considered a "NON-servicable part" and must not be disassembled. That said, I ended up taking mine apart to clean it and replace the o-rings.
As you see I did remove the snap ring, though I can't remember exactly why this was necessary. EDIT: Actually, I suspect I didn't remove the snap ring when I took the OPRV apart. However this was so long ago my memory is fuzzy.
Be careful when reassembling the valve to ensure that the inner o-ring doesn't roll out of the grove as you force the two pieces together. You wont get oil pressure if this happens.
Here's a thread with some further discussion on the topic: https://rennlist.com/forums/944-turb...alve-oprv.html

Thanks for the info. Did you have to remove the snap ring to take the OPRV apart? MIne is not coming apart by hand and I don't want to use tools on it just yet even though I got it for less than 3 bucks.

I would attempt to take the OPRV apart without removing the snap ring. You will definitely have to source a new inner o-ring if you do this.

Yeah it looks like the o rings are shown in the picture, not the snap ring. I got the OPRV apart with a little more tugging and will get the o-rings from Pelican even though I have the same size o-rings in my collection. Better be sure than have headache. Thanks for the info.
