Sputtering idle all of a sudden
Was driving home the other day, while waiting at the light the car started to idle funny so i pulled into the gas station. Let the car run for a minute or so then it really started getting bad. Lot's of smoke out of the exhaust, seems like it's running really rich. Car can't move under it's own power, the car can idle with out dying, and barely rev a little bit... sputters A LOT. Any attempt to move the car will cause it to stall. Any ideas what might have happened? Seems like something broke all of a sudden.
86 944 Turbo - 40k, new wires, plugs, distributor, coil, head gasket... lots of other things.

FPR i changed about a year ago or so.
As for the idle valve, it seems like that only affects the idle, from what i was able to research. The car sputters really badly, regardless of rev. It'll actually hardly rev up above past 2.5k. Lacks power to move itself even just a few feet.

If the ISV is stuck open it is allowing manifold pressure out to the j boot... a vacuum leak is doing the same thing but to atmosphere...
Failed TPS is my #1, followed by vacuum leak, and closely followed by failed ISV...
but I could be wrong!
Trouble shoot the TPS and ISV... or go get a smoke generator (also called a intake / exhaust smoke tester, shop can do this for you) the smoke will come out any vacuum leaks...
TPS and ISV info can be found on http://www.clarks-garage.com/
also worth a look would be the info there on the AFM checkout procedure...

I would start checking all the recently replaced parts. If an ignition component is loose or faulty the engine may run as described.
If you have access to a fuel pressure gauge I'd check the pressure next...

In addition to the good advice you are getting - if those do not prove to be the problem - I would look at ECU (what do we call it? DME). It sounds similar to a problem I had with mine shortly after I bought my car.
Additionally, I experience similar problems when I wash my car and get too much water in the engine bay. I suspect water gets into the MAF controller and disrupts the contact.
