I'm going to be selling a really nice set of late offset 16" phones, but I'm not sure I want to deal with shipping... How do you guys usually ship a full set of wheels, and what are the prices like?

 

Drop them off at UPS. Expect shipping to be 150-200

 

when i sent my wheels off to be refurbished they came back in 4 humongo boxes. cool thing is they packed the wheels in the boxes with that expanding package foam.

 

I've shipped/received several sets, boxes are available free at any shop that sells wheels. I'd recommend reinforcements where the rim meets the sides of the box to prevent the rim cutting thru the box when stacked/handled. Also poly bag over the whole wheel. Heavy cardboard over the face of the wheel. Many of the boxes already have this kind of stuff you can re-use.

 

Ship them in sets of 2. I've shipped several sets of wheels, always through USPS and never had a problem. Usually runs about $20-40 per pair depending on where they go (Cont. US) using parcel post.

2 wheels per box stacked on top of each other, packed with foam sheets in between the rims.
Much cheaper this way.

 

If you are shipping out wheels with tires, then my suggestion is to find some sturdy cardboard boxes and then cut them up into squares where the sides are the same width as the tires. Fold the edges of the cardboard over the tire and strap tape the bottom edge to the top edge. Do that on all 4 corners. Then reinforce that by taping more on the same area as well as the 4 sides. Then ship each one seperately. Cost will be expensive through UPS Ground or FedEx Ground where it could cost anywhere between $120-$200. People have said to ship with Greyhound Bus as they are much cheaper. Haven't tried that yet. Good luck.

Last set of wheels I bought, the seller slapped a shipping label on each wheel and sent them on their way. No boxes. And yes, it was a Rennlister. And if that's not bad enough, two wheels were bent to the point of being unusable (after I explicitly asked about straightness).

Maybe I should "out" the friggin' dipstick as a warning to others?

 

Mostly about the box and the circumstances it is put through. I had a set of CupIIs that were sent back to the shipper and insurance paid for the damage during shipping.

If they are perfect, local pick up probably make someone really happy.

That said would ask for shipping on a set of wheels- yes if insured.

No tires? I've seen people ship like that with tires with no issues, but I'd never ship like that without tires to protect them.

 

Two at a time, face to face, with carboard in between them and on the ends, with a metric ton of shrinkwrap. I usually let some air out of the tires as well.
