I'm in the process of detailing my Guards Red 951, and I just cannot seem to get the hood "shiny." It seems like there is still a haze remaining which I believe is oxidized paint.
First I tried the Zymol HD Cleanse with a hand applicator. That really didn't seem to be strong enough to make much of a difference.
I then tried some of the Meguiar's 3 step process (Step 1 Cleaner) also with a hand applicator. This has made some improvement, but I still don't have a real shine even after Step 2 Polish.
Recommendations on how to "waken up" my 16 year old paint?

Have you tried the clay bars that Meguiars and mothers make?
They remove anything on top of the paint that might be causing it to be a little cloudy...
Just a thought.
Either that or a good orbital polisher and a lot of polishing compound.

My car was orange when I bought it. I went over the whole car twice with cheap turtle wax heavy duty rubbing compound and it came out gleaming india red. YMMV.

Have 2 Guards Red Porsches, clay bar didn't work. I've tried pretty much everything on both of them. The '86's hood is the worst and the '89 isn't that bad but it has some. They both look great after a carnuba wax, but go right back to their prior state after the next wash without a wax. I'll try ribs' suggestion but I'm not holding my breathe!!!!!!!!!
On the bright side don't feel bad, I haven't seen a guards red 944 that hasn't been in storage for 10 years that doesn't have our same problem (or seen repaint). Join the club...
