OKAY, NOW THE BIG QUESTION...
Am I crazy or is being the proud owner of a 944 well worth the cost???
my only regret is that I don't have a se ondary car yet.
Well, I have to go get my balljoints done now...

I spent all of my cash on the car on my own free will, knowing that it is a toy and an "extravagence" for me as a reward for working my *** off at work. (it's not my primary mode of transport)
Now, with that being said, If I added my receipts up, you still might see a grown man cry.........but these cars aren't really about being rational and frugal, right?
Um, is there a 12-step program for my problem....?

BOOST!
Just got mine out of the shop on Friday where I dropped $970 for ANOTHER slave cylinder
, all new hoses, new injectors, and new fuel hoses. The thing ran like a scalded cat! I couldn't be happier!

You know what's worse? close to $30k was "spent" on your car in depreciation, and probably way more than that if you factor in inflation. Your repairs costs are downright cheap.

One other thing. The misses "allows" me the pleasure of spending the $$$ on the Porsche because she knows that the 951 is the only other woman in my life. Not pleading goody two shoes or anything, but I don't drink (well, not daily at any rate), don't smoke, and I don't go to the mens club. As a result I figure I save enough to drop a few bills on the Porsche every now and then!

Thats seems like a lot now, but at the time it always seems to make perfect sense. Although if you are going to "waste" your money in those places, Houston is the place to do it (now that Tampa cracked down on the rules at Mons Venus). And Ive certainly done my due dilligence on that subject all over the US <img border="0" title="" alt="[Wink]" src="wink.gif" />

I just finished totaling up my receipts tonight. $6638.37 total and $4100 for the car. Have had the car for 5 months or which it only has been running for 3 (timing belt broke 3 weeks after purchace.) So that all equals out to around $845/month, Hopefully its on the way down from here!
I am just glad that I was able to do everything my self, things would have probably doubled with the labor involed.

Let's take a look at this from a different perspective. To get a true idea of the cost of ownership, you should take only-
Cost of car+
Cost of repairs+
Cost of insurance
Divide by number of months owned
to get the cost per month of the car.
If you apply the same logic to a new car, an arguement could be made for owning a Toyota or Honda, so you have to factor in some intangibles, like it IS a Porsche. Wheels, go fast goodies, and seats are all optional things and shouldn't even be totaled. Case in point, my brother just got a 944, bought off a mechanic's lien for a song. Put another $1+k in parts (not all necessary, but cheap insurance) to get it running reliably, and he's in this game for less than $2.5k. NOW, add in that stupid gonzo stereo, extra wheels, new interior carpet set, aftermarket steering wheel, throttle cam, Bursch headers, ANSA exhaust, and so on and the "cost" is up well over $4k, all for a NA.
My 951 was had for under $6k, running. Needed brake master, proportioning valve, tires, timing belt, waterpump, rollers, and seals. Counting in all that, I'm in for about $7k. To compare that to the cost of a new car, let's assume that I financed $7k for the 951 over 36 months. The per month payment on straight simple interest of 10% (it is used remember) is $214. Add to that an insurance bill at $42/month (full coverage), then my "cost" is $256/month. Since I didn't finance the car, that cost is coming down steadily if I don't go buying a bunch of goodies. (I did get a FEW things.) Compare that to the monthly payment for 60 months of a new car, then factor in the insurance and other costs (tires, etc) and all of a sudden, these cars aren't so bad, unless you pay someone else to spin your wrenches.
Also, sticking $$ into G strings at the clubs will only bring frustration, legally, you can only look and not touch. Bad investment.
If you are paying someone else to wrench on your car, you could buy a decent set of tools for just the labor on a timing belt, roller, and seal job. The side benefit is that no mechanic will use you as his cash cow and you learn a lot about your car.

I haven't totalled my reciepts for a while, and in the next few months I'm adding 17 inch wheels and probably some other stuff, I don['t think I want to total my reciepts, but it does work out to a little over a grand a year which is not bad. My car is nearing 20 years old (it's an 85) and not many cars this old looks this good and drive this good still, but old BMW's ARE everywhere, and in great shape, e30s are much cheaper to maintain than our cars, there are tons of old german cars still going strong.

I recently totaled my receipts from PartsHeaven only, and was pretty surprised to find that it came out to be under $1000. Each of two times I took the car to a mechanic, it was well into the four figures.
It really pays to do your own repairs and maintenance and to buy used parts where appropriate....

But now I have to add in a new LSD and trans. OHHH CRY
Ohhh and tires. I mean damn I go though tires fast so make that tripple. then add in stuff I need to do like new front brakes (all new calipers got water intothem some how so I honed the aluminum cylinders but with no anadization I am afraid and brakes are starting to go bad again.) I need new shocks and struts. I am still happy I mean another $10,000 wouldn't make me take another car. I look at my car it has totaled one jeep and one honda accord (ohh and the accord didnt leave a scratch on the car) Both rear ended me. The thing is though my car is 13 years old and no rust on the body anywere or the underbody (inludeing the muffler) I mean my moms new 03 expedition has rust on exasut. Its just things like that that let me know why I love this car so much.

I refuse to even consider adding up the receipts for my 951... not doing it!
They way I look at it, this is therapy and a heck of a lot cheaper than getting professional help from a shrink...

One other view...
I have a car that looks and runs better than anything else (new or used) on the market that I would "want" to afford.
And yes, that is one LARGE avatar.
