Post Broken balance belt: scary pictures

Last weekend I investigated an intermittent faint belt whine that had been coming and going for several weeks and found the balance shaft belt was broken. Check out these pics:

I bought the car last November with full OPC service history, last service 14,000 km (9,000 m) ago. It's really fortunate that it didn't take out the cam belt also. The motor was running smoother than any of my previous 5 16v P-cars! So the moral of the story is, check out your belts regularly, it only takes a few minutes to remove the upper belt cover for a quick check.

cheers
Derek

If it had been checked 9K miles ago it shouldn't have been too lose. Do you know what caused the failure...

ringo951,

Yes, that's the point... I've owned 5 of these cars, done several belt changes, loads of other maintenance, and consider myself more than averagely useful when it comes to maintenance and mechanical sympathy. Hence my surprise that this didn't manifest itself in any way other than a faint intermittent whine. No noticeable vibration.

As to the cause, the belts look old. I need to go through the service book again to check to see if the belt changes are actually recorded, but the normal service stamps are there.

cheers
Derek
