Hello,
I have been thinking and thinking and thinking about what to do to my car next, what would improve driveability and performance without grenading the engine... and I need a new clutch in the next year or two so I'm looking at fiddling with the drivetrain anyway...
So tell me, How hard is it to put a 968 6 speed transmission in a 951? Is it pretty much a bolt-in job?
And would the narrower shift range permit me to keep the 951 in the boost more, or would it be counterproductive?
Lastly, cost. How much for a used 6 speed? Are they even available?
Thanks.

I wanted to put the 968 6-speed in my car, cheapest I could find was $4500, as is. The rebuilt ones were going for $6500. It is an easy bolt-in. You can even retain your shifter. Their rairity must drive up the price. I find new GM 6-speeds advertised for less than $2000.

Why do you think a 6 speed will make your car more driveable? I suppose with different gearing, you can get better response in certain conditions. But you can get different gears for your car without a 6-speed swap.
More is not always better, IMHO.

The thing about the 951 is you aren't getting full thrust except between 3000 and 6000 rpms...
So the trick is using the gearbox to keep the car in that range. I thought perhaps with 6 gears, a driver could maximize that band for best performance. But I could be dead wrong.
Any insights appreciated... especially if it's as expensive as it looks...
