Post Small things you like about your 944?

My 944's in the body shop again (2nd time in 2 months due to people running into me!) and I've been relying on rental cars - a Mustang convertible and a Mazda Protoge econobox. I sure do appreciate the 944, but it's not just the big things like handling and high quality build. Here are a few minor details I hate about the rentals, which I haven't really even consciously thought about with the 944, but now in comparison, they stick out like a sore thumb.

- Not enough room between steering wheel and door to fit my bended knee (Mustang). I have long legs and like to have the left one bent occasionally.

- Seat belt pulley is huge and blocks view over the left shoulder, plus I feel like it's going to poke my eye out (Protoge).

- Stereo buttons inconvenient to push while resting hand on gearshift **** (Protoge, Mustang). I channel surf a lot and on the 944 I can keep my palm on the **** and jab away at the buttons and not have to raise my hand (and entire arm) up.

- Floor is not flat (Protoge, Mustang). I can never put my left foot in a comfortable position because of the wavy floor as well as the floor mat retention clips.

- Steering wheel has an annoying molding seam right where I want to put my hands (Protoge).

- Glove box useless (Mustang). In fact, it can't even hold the user manual.

- Console elbow rest latch located where elbow is, so lid flips up unintentionally (Mustang).

What about you guys?

The 944 makes you feel like you are apart of the car, rather than IN the car. Many new luxury cars don't give you that personal interaction and connectedness that you get with the 944..

My other car is a Jetta so I don't have quite the culture shock going from one to the other. The Porsche does promote a feeling of being a cut above all the other riff raff. The dead pedal is nice and it seems to work better for long trips.

Resting your hand on the gearshift is considered a very bad habit by the way. Reputed to cause damage to the transmission according to the VW owners manual.

- Nice positioning of arm rests. Always been a peeve of mine in Fords. Either to high or too low.

- Power window, turn signals are in a perfect position.

- legroom.

- I hate center consoles but the 944 is so nice, having the tranny tunnel so high up is actually a +

- Great visibility and good mirror position. IN fact mirrors can give a good view BEHIND the car, which is rare.

- simple. I don't need an assload of buttons and other distractions.

- nice pedal locations. An wide floorpan area giving loads of wiggle room.

- Nice stability (it is a heavy car for it's size)

- predictable. Even in the the things that go wrong

- looks.

It's paid for. Of course that just means that I can afford to fix it.

Cool

That little emblem on the hood that says "Porsche". <img border="0" title="" alt="[Wink]" src="wink.gif" />

What I like the most about the car is the solid THUD I hear when I close the doors or hatch or the hood for that matter, it is to the point where I have had, on several occasions, people ask me to do it again just so they could hear it and then say "how can an all glass hatch sound so solid" or "wow that is a solid sounding car especially for being 13 years old"

I like the view of the rear fenders in the outside mirrors.

I agree.. the bank-vault quality of the doors and hatch. People always say "Whoa it sounds like a tank!".

1) The fact that the faster you go, the more stable and poised it feels.
2) The steering is perfect - drive a 944 and every other car will steer like a '73 LTD with a 300-pound man in the trunk.
3) The driving position is perfect - I've driven mine for 10 hours straight and just wanted more.
4) It looks sexy as hell, even after all these years. How many other cars built in 1983 can you say that about?
5) The interior is elegant and beautifully designed.
6) The feeling you get when you nail it in 4th at about 85 (S owners only)
7) I have a brand new WRX. It cost 4 times as much as the Porsche and is much faster, and far more sophisticated. It's pretty much the modern definition of "fun to drive". The Porsche is more fun to drive.

The ashtray is in the perfect place.
Seat hugs my butt like my G/F.
fits 2 bags of golf clubs
great handling in all weather (up to 5" of snow)
