Alright, alright, Haynes is telling me to pull the sucker off the car...I saw a 5 minute fix and my eyes glazed over. And now that I know what's up, I can search the archives...

With the write up in Clarks Garage and the Haynes Manual you should have all the answers. It is really a simple task, like I said, just a mess in terms of dealing with the grease.
Here is a foto of the bolts, boot and socket:

Is there a reason there are cheesehead bolts on this thing? It seems rather...annoying.
Also, can I get comparable bolts at, say, Home Depot. I haven't checked them out, but I'm willing to bet mine aren't in the best shape.
Do I want to take the whole half-shaft off? I think it's only the outside joint...Is there a good way to isolate the prob with the car off? I guess I could just twist it and feel for a click...Oh yeah, drive the car on ramps? Jack it up? This will be interesting.

Mine made a hellish thump that would go away for a short period if I 'jiggled' them side to side.
Had them rotated and repacked with grease at the local Porsche dealer so it is proper solution. Apparently only one surface of the joint wears so by turning them over it evens out the wear. They charged $190 which didn't seem to bad to avoid such a dirty job.

When I was there at Autozone (only place in the area that sold the rear defroster fix kit...), I got the grease...it was a moly based semi-synthetic instead of just the regular stuff.
Yes, injecting is only buying me time....My thought is probably going to brand new axles when it starts again and doing both at the same time and being done with it, hopefully for many, many years.

lol....Too much Tremelune.....check my post in the 951 forum...Busted. Fog/Driving light that is. 4" hole in the glass!!!! Yikes!!!! My driver's side one has a crack in it anyway, so I get to drop $400 tomorrow for new ones and instead of just buying stock, I'm getting the Euro ones and some protective covers for them. Mine were getting a little hazy anyway.....and well you see.....

Just be careful, C.V. joints and boots are not to be played with. I just had fun with them on Friday!
I took my boyfriend's car in to have the C.V. boots replaced (Eagle Talon/Mitsubishi Eclipse), and the darn shaft came apart! Fortunately, the shop was in a generous mood, and felt it would take them more time to put it back together, than to sell the complete assembly with both boots on, for $110. I bought them a case of beer, for being so considerate.
Because it was a front drive vehicle, it was masquerading as a transmission problem, just felt like it was shifting hard.
I took a look at it, and the inner C.V. joint was very unhealthy, I think it would have dropped while my boyfriend was driving it. He thinks I'm great, but I think it was more like luck this time!
Now I've got to tackle the stupid oilpan and transmission gaskets, while looking for a 944 for myself, grr.

Alright, just be clear, my plan was to remove both axles and swap them, but now I don't want to (I might get booted out of my garage today, yay). Should I put the axle I pulled off back on the same way or rotate it?
Like, should I put the outside to the inside and the inside to the outside, or should I just put it back on the way I pulled it off?

I think if you search back, you'll find that Danno has mentioned that rotating on the same side doesn't change anything because of where the wear occurs in each. Others have said it does help....guess it's one of those decisions we'll leave up to you

Woohoo! No more clicking! I ended up swapping the axles from left to right. Just seemed like a good idea without too much work.

ok i couldnt find my old post, but i bought new c.v. joints and installed them. at first, i thought the problem was the passenger side, but when turning it would make the clicking and clunking at the drivers' side. i only changed the drivers' side so far. followed all the rules, i did find a nick in one of the "races". the grease that WAS in there was like liquid. i read in i think clarkes garage that different greases break down other greases. i guess thats what happened from the last time i packed them. well from sunday to wednesday, everything was fine. on the way to work on thursday, i heard the clunking again. i only used the supplied grease with the lobro kits. i figured it WAS possible to over do the grease. does anyone know what is compatible? the clicking is on/off now and then like mentioned above. is it possibly transmission? i hope not, but im getting a new one for thanksgiving. please help.
