My S2 is actually more reliable than my Camry. It's kinda funny having to go and pick up my wife who's stranded somewhere, seems it should be the other way around. Good maintenance pays big dividends. I do the tensioner pads when I do the belts, all done and no worries. Overall, I think the S2 is a great car with a great engine, I've just hit 140K and it's as strong as ever. Asking $3500 might be a little steep though, I'd probably pay $2K if it was accident free. What options does it have?

I think the Crank Position Sensor went bad and he cranked and cranked the engine til it hydrolocked with fuel...
Im betting there is nothing wrong with the lower block at all... an oil change with some 40 weight syntech and a new CPS the car would most likely run fine...
Cars worth no more than $2500 in non-running condition; the only plus is that its a 91... so it has the 968 spoiler; the problem is that it has very high mileage...

it's really great to hear about these high-mile, daily drivers. then to hear stories of belts breaking makes you think twice about going past 35k without having this work done...

I bought an 89 S2 a couple of months ago for $2700 w/204K miles..The car was in really good shape, interior just about perfect, the dash has been replaced, timing belt done 15K miles ago, recent shocks, struts, brakes, etc.
You really could find yourself in a hole really quick with buying a non-running car..Who knows what else could be wrong with it. $2000 - $2500 Max...

1) i did my own 944na belts with a $25 kricket tool and never had any problem and the car was great until the cooling system started to go and it would over heat, definatly a reliable car, i drove it from santa barbara to san diego a lot and it never died on me
2) he wants the oil pan so you dont see the metal parts and shavings that are in it from the engine failure lol
3) i like the spoiler and not many 1991 944's

There is a site that would let you plug in the vin and look up the options that the car was made with
fwiw a 91 LSD trans in good working order is worth over 1k all by itself!

^^^^ That kinda makes sence, but if the oil pan is off, I would probobly be able to detect some metal chips. I was thinking that someone probobly ofered him money for the oil pan, since the add is for parting out.

the only options of value are 220 LSD and 030 suspension. if it has LSD or the suspension i am willing to bet the ad would say so. the rest are standard codes of partial leather, 8 speaker stereo, sunroof, cruise and factory alarm. all standard equipment listed as an option.
the car is not a classic, is not a collectible, and never will be either. when running, any 944 is just a nice old car with a cult like following.
they only brought a few into the US becuase nobody was buying them. Porsche was on the verge of bandruptcy because of many reasons, one being their entry level car was based on a 13 year old design that wasnt even designed to be a porsche. pretty pathetic when compared to the power and new technology available form asia for significantly less money.
in 90 my friends dad got rid of his 84 944 (not his first porsche, and he always had a german car since being stationed in the fatherland years earlier) and bought a ZX (his first asian sports car, the 90 lexus was his first asian car bought while (as in a 20 minute transaction) the porsche was getting the oil changed at the dealer and he walked next door). He didnt want the same car AGAIN even though it had 50 more hp. you get the idea.
usually when a car is not wanted new, it is not wanted as a collectible and is not considered a classic.
that car is worth money parted out, and worth somewhere between diddly and squat as one car. the seller bought it recently, there was discussion here about it when the previous seller was advertising it. my guess is the seller realized it is more damaged than he thought and wants to cut his losses.

Tom R: brilliant...
that's the biggest problem with Porsche: their unwillingness to design a front engine supercar void of major design flaws... too much bad engineering regurgitated over and over without moving toward superior designs... and that includes the porsche 928 with the world's longest timing belt.
Nothing against the trillion dollar Carrera GT or the 997 GT2 and GT3s... Great cars and all even with the 997s engines hanging out the back...
But Tony G's car remains the greatest Porsche I have ever seen and it's a 20 + year old car. And i think that -- because he proves that you can do so much with so little;
Imagine what could have been done with Porsches' recent modern styling touches which I believe are under-rated by a lot of guys on this forum...
It surely is a cult following. When I do sick upgrades on my 968, i realize no one will ever appreciate it but the transaxle guys here on Rennlist who know how to do it all themselves. My car will never sell for much more than the original price i paid for it but, that's ok.

They are actually very reliable. The timing belt is better than the 8v 944 and if you keep up on that and change the tensioner pad every 100K or so, maybe a clutch, it'll easily go 200-250K. Great daily drivers too. the trouble is that some people ignore the tensioner pad or when the belts get done they do something wrong (timing belt set too tight, not properly retensioned, rollers neglected, etc.)
One of my S2's came to me as a non-runner. At 135K it had a near-new timing belt and a torn-off chain tensioner. I also found that the shop that did the timing belt, water pump, and rollers only actually did the belt. $200 worth of maintenance parts would have kept that motor together to 200K easily but...
