Post 928 V-8 into 944? Why? Why not?

Has it ever been done? Does anyone have links or information to research this potential project? Does anyone have a 944 with a 928 V-8 installed? Seems like a much better conversion than a Renegade LT1? Just curious.

I'm pretty sure that the engine is just too wide. It requires custom fabrication of the front end or something like that. If you want a V8, it'd be easier to shove a LT1 in there.

Remember the 928 isn't a V it's flat, thus very wide.

Tube frame required.

I love the 944 and I plan to own many more. But damnit when they took the 924 back from VW couldn't they have come up with a 6 or an 8 to put in it.

Geeesh

Then again if that were the case I probably couldn't afford one.

928 is a 90 degree v-8. Too wide.

And heavy.

A 250-300hp V6 would have been sweet.

aren't we better off having a large displacement 4 as opposed to a 6? i was under the impression that larger combustion chambers will give a better powerband with good low end torque. if i had my choice i'd like a 3.0l flat 4 turbo

Depends.

as long as the 6 had a larger displacement would be going a lot faster.

Physically, its too long, too... the firewall and brake master cylinder would require some significant work to fit the 928 engine in there, and to be honest, its no better than an aluminum block chev engine, as far as performance for the $... True, it would be all Porsche, but I think it would largely be an exercise in futility.

Weight schmeidt, lead is cheap and there is plenty of room in the back for it.

And yeah, maybe loose some throttle response, but even that I doubt. Those Mustang GT's have throttle responce. Remember I said six or eight.

Thats right...the 928 SOHC motor is to wide. And it only makes around 250 to 275 hp. You have to get into the 4-valve motors to make any hp. Very $$$. I know a guy that was dead set on converting his 86 944 with an S-4 motor. Buchered the car, spent big $$$, then sold the motor and junked the carcass. The LT-1 V-8 is the only way to go, plus $ for $ , the LT-1 will out-hp any porsche motor ever made!!

I believe it is still on their website. The same customer owns a 911 thats called "woody". Both of these cars are track only. He had both of them at the club races at Laguna and Sears last year.
