Default Strut rust fix?

I was hoping to get some advice about a suspension problem.

I have a 1985.5 944 NA that I had bought as a project in 2000. I replaced clutch, valves, oil cooler seals, belts all hoses and install a msd ignition. I got to drive it about 25 miles before it had to be placed into storage in a dry garage- covered with a tarp.

I got a chance to see the car a few months ago and after clearing the dust and doing an inspection I noticed that the drivers side strut tower was rusted. Not surface rust....but rusted right thru. The tower itself needs to be unwelded and replaced before it will be safe and drivable.

In order for this to happen I need to get it shipped about 800 miles which will cost between 600 -800 % so Im trying to determine if it is worth shipping or just looking for another 944/968 where I am.

Any ideas as to the cost of such a repair?

That is really odd. I've never heard of anyone having a rust problem at all, let alone rust on a structural member that goes clean through. I would worry about other components. Don't invest in teh shipping until you're sure that the rust is isolated to that location.

Agreed. I'd look vary carefully at the rest of the car because that isn't one of the most likely places to rust. I have seen a couple of cars that were driven in New England winters for years and they will eventually rust - typically around the rear fender lip and down low.

Car is currently in Il and has been for a least 10 years--garaged for the last 5. It would be shipped to the gulf coast of Fl.

Ive seen no other problem areas--accept for the paint on the roof being .....corroded or discolored.

If it were me, I would be looking for a new shell to swap everything into... there is a very nice 86 951 shell fs on here right now...

The rusted out strut tower is repairable, but where else is rust going to crop up next... these bodies were dip galvanized as a complete body when built, rust usually indicates other trauma caused at some point... lower rockers and fender lips are subject to everything from jacks to rocks while driving, so they are usual rust points... the strut tower... that is a whole other animal
